Cold or mismatched water after a change
This looks like: sharp temperature drop (or rise) stressing circulation
Why this happens
Sudden temperature swings hit organs before test kits blink — especially narrow-range tropicals.
How sure are we? High when replacement water sat cold in the garage or hose winter-chilled.
What to do right now
- Warm room-temp replacement water for the next change — float sealed jugs if needed.
- Small partial change (20%) now only if fish are in crisis — match within 1°C.
- Calibrate cheap floating thermometers — sometimes heaters lie.
- Heat the room, not the glass, when big swings happen.
- Write target temp on the change bucket with tape so helpers don’t go rogue.
What not to do
- Don’t pour boiling water in to “fix” temp — pockets scald fish.
If that doesn’t fix it
If shock ruled out, revisit KH/pH stability next.
