Cold or mismatched water after a change

This looks like: sharp temperature drop (or rise) stressing circulation

Why this happens

Sudden temperature swings hit organs before test kits blink — especially narrow-range tropicals.

How sure are we? High when replacement water sat cold in the garage or hose winter-chilled.

What to do right now

  1. Warm room-temp replacement water for the next change — float sealed jugs if needed.
  2. Small partial change (20%) now only if fish are in crisis — match within 1°C.
  3. Calibrate cheap floating thermometers — sometimes heaters lie.
  4. Heat the room, not the glass, when big swings happen.
  5. Write target temp on the change bucket with tape so helpers don’t go rogue.

What not to do

If that doesn’t fix it

If shock ruled out, revisit KH/pH stability next.
