What truly is the hardiest fish?

12 February 2026

Everyone has an opinion. Mine is based on one fish: Sharky. He’s a white cloud mountain minnow, and I’ve lost count of how many years we’ve had him. Multiple setups. A tank breakage that meant he went straight into a rapidly treated water bowl while we scrambled. He didn’t just survive — he’s still going strong. So when someone asks “what’s the hardiest fish?” I think of him.

White clouds get a lot of love for their temperature range. They can handle cooler water than most tropicals — the kind of fish that can mix a beach holiday with a ski season, if you know what I mean. Understanding temperature ranges for your fish in App-aquatic helps you plan tanks and avoid the “why did that one die?” moment. White clouds are forgiving on that front, which is one reason they’re often recommended for beginners and unheated setups.

I’m not saying the white cloud mountain minnow is the single hardiest fish on the planet. But this species? Pretty darn hardy. Sharky’s proof. If you’re after a fish that can roll with the punches (and the occasional tank emergency), they’re worth a look. Just don’t name yours Sharky — I’ve got the patent on that one.
