Planning a 50 gallon tank? Community, centrepiece, or cichlid?
23 February 2026
Fifty gallons (~190 litres) is a sweet spot: big enough for variety, small enough to manage. The question is direction — do you want a mixed community, a show fish with supporting cast, or a cichlid project?
Community: Multiple schools, a gentle centrepiece, and a cleanup crew. Tetras, rasboras, corys, and a pair of dwarf gouramis. Colourful, active, forgiving. Great for beginners or anyone who wants movement without aggression.
Centerpiece: Angels or pearl gouramis as the star, tetras and corys as the cast. Fewer species, more impact. Tall tanks suit angels; provide plants and vertical space.
Cichlid: South American (Severums, keyholes) or African (Malawi mbuna, Tanganyika). More research, more personality, more territorial behaviour. Match water hardness and pH to your chosen species.
Whichever path you choose, run your combination through our stocking calculator before you buy. And if you want to plan and track long-term, App-aquatic helps with that. Full breakdown in our 50 gallon setups guide.
