The nitrogen cycle: why every tank needs it
24 February 2026
Fish waste and uneaten food produce ammonia — toxic to fish. Beneficial bacteria convert ammonia to nitrite (also toxic), then nitrite to nitrate (less harmful in moderation). That chain — ammonia → nitrite → nitrate — is the nitrogen cycle. Without it, your tank can’t handle fish safely.
Cycling a new tank means building up those bacteria before adding fish. Our guides cover how the nitrogen cycle works and how to cycle a fish tank so you can start with a healthy, stable setup.
