Why bottom feeders deserve more than an afterthought

Most people pick bottom feeders last - a cleanup crew tacked on once the "real" fish are sorted. That framing leads to bad outcomes: a lone corydoras hiding in a corner, an underfed pleco rasping at the silicone because there's no algae left, or a kuhli loach that vanishes into the gravel and is never seen again.

Bottom-dwelling fish occupy a genuinely distinct ecological niche. They process the substrate layer, control soft algae, and in a well-matched tank they're active, visible, and interesting. Getting them right means treating them as the species they are - with specific social needs, substrate requirements, and feeding behaviour - not as janitorial staff.

Corydoras - the benchmark community bottom feeder

If you keep a peaceful community tank, some species of Corydoras will probably work in it. There are over 150 described species, but the ones you'll actually find in shops are mostly Corydoras paleatus (peppered cory), C. sterbai, C. trilineatus, and C. aeneus (bronze cory). They're broadly similar in care.

What they need

Temperature: 22-26°C (72-79°F) for most species, though C. sterbai tolerates up to 30°C and is the go-to cory for warmer discus or angelfish tanks. pH: 6.5-7.8. They're more adaptable than the books suggest, but don't push them into hard, alkaline water long-term.

The non-negotiable is smooth substrate. Corydoras forage by sifting substrate through their mouths, and they use sensory barbels to find food. On sharp gravel those barbels erode, get infected, and the fish deteriorates slowly over months. Switch to fine sand - play sand rinsed well is perfectly adequate - and you'll see a different animal. They'll actually dig, sift, and romp around the bottom instead of just sitting there looking subdued.

Keep a minimum of six of the same species. Mixed groups of different cory species don't school properly. They'll tolerate each other, but they're much more active and confident in a single-species group. A group of six in a 60-litre (15 US gal) tank is a realistic starting point.

Common mistake

Buying two or three corys as "bottom cleaners" for a larger tank. Lone or paired corydoras spend most of their time hiding and show none of the active, shoaling behaviour they're known for. Six is the floor, not an ideal.

Kuhli loach - more personality than most people expect

Pangio kuhlii is the eel-shaped, striped loach that spends its days wedged behind filters and its nights actually moving around. They're fully nocturnal and will be invisible in a brightly lit tank with nowhere to hide. Give them a few caves, some leaf litter or dense low plants, and a lid with no gaps - they're extraordinary escape artists and will find a 5 mm hole in your aquarium cover without difficulty.

Care specifics

Temperature: 24-28°C (75-82°F). pH: 6.0-7.0. They prefer softer, slightly acidic water but adapt reasonably well to neutral conditions. Size: 8-12 cm (3-5 in). They need smooth sand - same reasoning as corydoras, they forage in the same way.

Keep at least four to six together. Solitary kuhlis are timid to the point of near-invisibility. A group of six will emerge at dusk, pile on top of each other in their favourite cave during the day, and become an actual feature of the tank rather than a rumour.

Tip

Feed kuhlis after you turn the main lights off. Drop sinking pellets or frozen bloodworms near their hiding spots once the tank dims. This is when they're actually hunting, and you'll see behaviour you'd otherwise miss entirely.

Bristlenose pleco - the one pleco that fits a normal tank

The common pleco (Pterygoplichthys pardalis) gets sold as a 5 cm juvenile and grows to 45 cm (18 in). It produces enormous amounts of waste. Most home tanks can't support one long-term. This is the fish that ends up in rehoming groups constantly, and most of those sellers genuinely didn't know what they were buying.

The bristlenose (Ancistrus sp.) is the answer. It maxes out at around 12-15 cm (5-6 in), eats genuine amounts of algae, rasps at wood - which it needs for digestion - and stays manageable in tanks from 120 litres (30 US gal) upward.

What bristlenoses need

Temperature: 23-27°C (73-81°F). pH: 6.5-7.5. They're not fussy about water chemistry within those ranges. Provide at least one piece of driftwood - they rasp at it regularly and it seems to support their digestive health. Feed with algae wafers, blanched courgette or cucumber, and spirulina-based sinking pellets. Don't assume the algae in your tank is enough; a well-lit planted tank often has less algae than a new owner expects.

One per tank unless you have a very large footprint (200+ litres / 55+ gal). Males are territorial with each other and will fight.

Honest take

Bristlenoses won't save a tank with a diatom explosion or green spot algae problem. They graze soft algae steadily, but they're not a treatment. If your glass is coated in green spot algae, a bristlenose won't touch it - that needs a different approach (reduced photoperiod, phosphate control). Know what you're buying them for.

Otocinclus - small, specialist, worth the extra care

Otocinclus vestitus and related species are the go-to soft algae grazers for planted tanks. At 3-5 cm (1.5-2 in) they're small enough for nano setups, peaceful with everything, and remarkably effective on green film algae on glass and plant leaves.

The problem is that otos are almost always wild-caught, and they arrive at wholesalers genuinely malnourished. Shops often receive them in poor condition and sell them before they've recovered. The mortality rate in the first two weeks is high for this reason, not because they're inherently fragile.

Buy from a tank where you can actually see them grazing - not sitting motionless at the bottom. A healthy oto moves constantly. Acclimate slowly (drip acclimation over 60-90 minutes is worth doing here), and make sure your tank has established algae growth before you add them. A brand-new tank with no algae will starve them. Supplement with algae wafers, blanched spinach, and zucchini.

Keep in groups of at least four to six. They're social and do noticeably better in numbers. Temperature: 22-26°C (72-79°F). pH: 6.0-7.5.

Yoyo loach and zebra loach - active, rewarding, misunderstood

Botia almorhae (yoyo loach) reaches 12-15 cm (5-6 in). Botia striata (zebra loach) stays smaller at around 9 cm (3.5 in). Both are active, curious, and sociable - and both are frequently undersold as simple bottom cleaners when they're actually intelligent fish with complex social behaviour.

The yoyo loach in particular has a reputation for fin-nipping if kept in inadequate numbers or in tanks that are too small. A group of five or six in a tank with plenty of structure behaves very differently from a trio in a bare 100-litre tank. The aggression people report is almost always a consequence of inappropriate keeping conditions.

Both species are excellent snail hunters - they'll clear a Malaysian trumpet snail or bladder snail population thoroughly. If you actually want to keep snails for any reason, don't add these.

Temperature: 24-28°C (75-82°F). pH: 6.5-7.5. They need strong filtration - they produce significant waste and are sensitive to elevated ammonia and nitrite. If you're not already across your nitrogen cycle, read that before stocking any loaches.

Watch out

Yoyo loaches are scaleless and semi-scaleless fish, which makes them highly sensitive to copper-based medications. Even small doses used to treat other fish in the same tank can be fatal. Remove them to a hospital tank before medicating.

Feeding bottom feeders properly

This is where most community tanks go wrong. Surface feeders - tetras, rasboras, livebearers - intercept almost everything before it sinks. Your corys and loaches are left with whatever reaches the substrate, which in a busy tank is often almost nothing.

The fix is deliberate target feeding:

  • Use sinking wafers or pellets specifically rated for bottom feeders. Flakes aren't good enough.
  • Drop food after lights dim, or use a feeding tube to place food directly on the substrate near where your bottom feeders rest.
  • Watch your fish. If corydoras are thin at the belly and your tetras are rounder than they should be, the bottom isn't getting enough food.
  • Blanched vegetables - courgette, cucumber, spinach - work for plecos, otos, and loaches. Skewer them so they sink and stay put.

Substrate: why it matters more than most guides admit

Sand vs. gravel isn't just aesthetic. For corydoras, kuhlis, loaches, and most substrate-foraging fish, fine smooth sand is functionally better. Sharp substrate causes physical damage to barbels and mouths over months - slow enough that most keepers attribute the deterioration to disease or age rather than the actual cause.

Pool filter sand and fine-grain aquarium sand both work. Avoid anything labelled "natural gravel" if you're keeping bottom foragers. A 5 cm (2 in) sand bed is plenty. Deeper beds can develop anaerobic pockets if they're not disturbed regularly - your corys will actually help with this by constantly sifting.

Tip

If you're switching from gravel to sand in an existing tank, do it gradually - remove a third of the gravel per water change over several weeks rather than overhauling the whole substrate at once. Disrupting everything simultaneously can crash your cycle. Speaking of which - if you haven't cycled your tank yet, do that before adding any fish.

Stocking combinations that actually work

A solid bottom-feeding crew for a 150-litre (40 US gal) community tank might look like: six Corydoras sterbai, one bristlenose pleco, and four to six otocinclus. That's a functional substrate layer with algae grazing, organic matter processing, and no territory conflicts. Add a group of kuhli loaches if the tank has enough shelter, though they'll overlap in substrate use with the corys - not a problem, just something to account for when feeding.

For a smaller 60-litre (15 US gal) nano tank: six Corydoras habrosus (salt and pepper cory - smaller than most at 2.5 cm) plus three or four otos is a manageable, well-balanced crew.

Avoid yoyo loaches with small, slow-moving fish like fancy guppies or long-finned varieties unless your tank is large and well-structured. Do bottom feeders actually clean the tank?

Partially. Corydoras, loaches, and plecos process uneaten food at the substrate level, which reduces the amount that rots and contributes to ammonia. Otos and bristlenoses graze algae. But none of them eliminate the need for water changes, gravel vacuuming, or filter maintenance - they add to the biological load at the same time as they process some of it. They're compatible with good tank management, not a replacement for it.

Can I keep just one corydoras?

You can, but you shouldn't. Corydoras are shoaling fish and display chronic low-level stress when kept alone - they hide, lose colour, and become inactive. A single cory in a community tank isn't thriving; it's coping
