Aquarium plant deficiencies: common signs and how to fix them

Yellow leaves, pinholes, pale new growth, plants that just will not take off. Most of it traces back to a handful of nutrient deficiencies, and there is one simple trick - reading old leaves versus new growth - that narrows it down fast. Here is how to diagnose the common ones and exactly what to dose to fix each.

The one trick that does most of the work

Before learning every symptom, learn this. Plants can move some nutrients around inside themselves and not others. When a mobile nutrient runs short, the plant strips it out of its old leaves to feed new growth, so the old, lower leaves show the damage first. When an immobile nutrient runs short, the plant cannot relocate it, so the new, upper leaves suffer while the old ones stay green.

That single observation cuts your list of suspects roughly in half before you look at anything else.

Nitrogen, potassium, phosphate - the macros

These are the nutrients plants need in the largest amounts, and they are all mobile (old leaves first). Nitrogen shortage shows as whole old leaves yellowing evenly and the plant stalling - common in lightly stocked, lightly fed tanks where there simply is not much fish waste. Potassium gives the classic pinholes in older leaves. Phosphate is less often the limiting factor but shows as general stunting. A comprehensive fertiliser covers all three at once.

Iron and the micros

Iron is the famous one because it hits new growth and red plants hardest - pale, washed-out new leaves with the veins still green, and reds that refuse to colour up. Iron is immobile, so it always shows at the top of the plant. A chelated iron supplement or a trace-element ("micro") fertiliser fixes it. Other micronutrients (manganese, boron, zinc) can cause similar new-leaf problems but are rare; a complete micro fert covers them.

Magnesium - the iron look-alike

Magnesium deficiency also causes interveinal chlorosis (yellow between green veins), but on old leaves, which is how you tell it apart from iron. It is most common in soft water with little mineral content. A little Epsom salt (magnesium sulphate) or a GH booster that contains magnesium sorts it out.

CO2 - usually the real culprit

This is the big one people miss. Carbon is the nutrient plants need most, and in a tank without injected CO2 it is often what is actually holding growth back - not iron, not nitrogen. The giveaway is plants that stall, deform or grow algae despite plenty of fertiliser and strong light. The fix is either to add CO2 (pressurised injection, or a liquid carbon source for easy plants) or to dial light back so it matches a low-CO2 tank. Throwing more fertiliser at a CO2 or light problem just feeds algae.

The honest take

Most "deficiencies" in everyday low-tech tanks are fixed by one thing: a balanced all-in-one liquid fertiliser, dosed consistently, plus the patience to let new growth come in healthy (old damaged leaves do not recover - judge by the new ones). Resist the urge to diagnose a single exotic nutrient and overdose it; chasing one element while light and CO2 are out of balance is the fastest way to grow algae instead of plants. Change one variable, wait a couple of weeks, and read the new leaves. And remember that some melting and leaf loss is just normal adjustment when plants first go into a tank.

How do I tell which nutrient my aquarium plant is missing?

Look at which leaves are affected first. Damage on old, lower leaves points to a mobile nutrient (nitrogen, potassium, phosphate, magnesium); damage on new, upper leaves points to an immobile one (iron, calcium, manganese). What causes holes in aquarium plant leaves?

Larger ragged holes are more often snail or fish grazing, or old leaves breaking down, so check whether the holes are on new or old leaves before blaming nutrients.

Do I need CO2 to grow aquarium plants?

No - many easy plants (anubias, java fern, cryptocorynes, mosses, vallisneria) grow well without injected CO2. But CO2 is often the real limiting factor when plants stall despite plenty of fertiliser and light. High light without CO2 tends to grow algae, not plants, so either add CO2 (injection or liquid carbon) or keep light moderate.
