Neon tetra disease: what it is and who it affects

24 February 2026

Neon tetra disease is caused by a parasitic microsporidian (Pleistophora hyphessobryconis). It infects the muscle tissue of the fish, causing fading colour, curved spine, swimming difficulties, and eventual death. There’s no cure once the parasite takes hold.

Despite its name, it doesn’t only affect neon tetras. Cardinal tetras, black neon tetras, and other tetras in the same family can be affected. It spreads when healthy fish eat infected tissue or spores. Our neon tetra disease guide covers symptoms, prevention, and how to protect your tank.
