Green Water in Fish Tank: Causes, Risks, and How to Clear It Fast

What actually causes green water

Green water isn't one problem - it's the result of several conditions aligning at once. The algae responsible are photosynthetic microorganisms, mostly Chlorella vulgaris and similar species, that are always present in trace amounts in aquarium water. Under normal conditions they can't compete. When conditions shift, they can double their population every few hours.

Three factors drive a bloom. You usually need at least two of them hitting simultaneously:

Direct or intense indirect sunlight

This is the single biggest trigger most guides understate. A tank that sits 2-3 metres from a south-facing window in summer is receiving enough light to spark a bloom even if your photoperiod is controlled. Direct sunbeams hitting the glass for even 1-2 hours a day are frequently enough. Move the tank or fit a blind - there's no chemical or biological fix that compensates for this light load.

Elevated dissolved nutrients

Ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and phosphate all feed free-floating algae. The most common sources are overfeeding (uneaten food breaks down fast), an overcrowded tank, infrequent water changes, and an immature or struggling biological filter. Long or inconsistent photoperiods

Running your lights for 10-12 hours gives free-floating algae more photosynthesis time than rooted plants or attached algae can exploit. Inconsistent timing - turning lights on and off at different hours - makes it worse, because algae adapt faster than higher plants to irregular schedules.

Common mistake

Most people blame their filter or their fish when green water appears, then spend money on chemical treatments. The tank that gets two hours of direct afternoon sun through an uncovered window will keep going green regardless of how good your filtration is. Sort the light source first.

Why green water is more dangerous than it looks

A pea-soup tank looks bad, but the real risk isn't visibility - it's dissolved oxygen. During the day a dense bloom actually raises oxygen levels through photosynthesis, which can mask the problem. At night, the same algae switch to respiration and consume oxygen. In a heavy bloom, oxygen levels can drop from a healthy 7-8 mg/L to below 3 mg/L between midnight and dawn. Most fish show serious stress below 4 mg/L. Below 2 mg/L you get fish at the surface gasping, and deaths follow quickly.

The worst-case scenario is a bloom crash. If the algae die rapidly - from a sudden blackout, a cold water change, or simply running out of nutrients - the decomposing mass gets consumed by bacteria that scavenge oxygen even more aggressively. A tank that looked stable on Tuesday can have dead fish by Thursday morning.

If your tank has reached pea-soup density - you genuinely cannot see your hand through 15 cm of water - add an air stone running overnight immediately, before you do anything else. Treat this as an emergency oxygen measure, not optional.

How to clear green water: your actual options

There are four approaches that work to varying degrees. They're not equally good, and the right choice depends on how severe your bloom is and what's in your tank.

UV steriliser - the most reliable method

A UV steriliser passes water past an ultraviolet lamp that destroys the algae's DNA. The dead cells clump together, your mechanical filter catches them, and the tank clears in 3-5 days without crashing oxygen levels or stressing your fish. This is the method to use if you want a fix that works every time.

The catch is sizing. Most people get this wrong by buying the cheapest unit and running it on the wrong flow rate. UV sterilisation works on dwell time - how long water is exposed to the lamp. Too fast a flow and the algae pass through without receiving a lethal dose. Too slow and you're not turning over enough water. Check the manufacturer's chart for the specific flow rate their unit requires for algae control (it's different from the flow rate for parasite control, which needs even slower flow). For a typical 200-litre tank fighting a green water bloom, you want a 9-18W unit running at 400-600 litres per hour through the steriliser head - not through your main filter.

3-day blackout

Cover every side of the tank completely - cardboard taped over the glass works fine - and turn off your lights for 72 hours. Without light, the algae die. Your fish will be fine in the dark for three days; your plants will survive if they're reasonably healthy.

The trade-offs are real though. The dying algae still decompose, so oxygen dips overnight during the blackout period. Keep an air stone running throughout. Heavily planted tanks can take a visible setback if their plants are already struggling. And unless you fix the underlying cause (direct sun, excess nutrients), the bloom returns within a week or two.

Daphnia

Daphnia - water fleas - are filter feeders that eat free-floating algae. A dense enough culture added to your tank can noticeably reduce a green water bloom in 24-48 hours, and your fish get a live food bonus. This is a legitimate approach that hobbyists swear by.

The honest limitation: if you have fish that actively eat Daphnia (most do, enthusiastically), the culture gets wiped out before it makes a dent. Works best in tanks with very small or non-predatory fish, or as a temporary measure in a quarantine tank. Also harder to source at the density you need unless you're already culturing them.

Honest take

Chemical flocculants and "green water treatments" sold at fish shops will clump the algae so your filter catches them faster. They work cosmetically for a few days. They do nothing for the nutrient levels or light exposure driving the bloom, so you'll be buying the same bottle again next month. Save the money.

Diatom filter

A diatom filter uses diatomaceous earth as a mechanical filter medium fine enough to physically trap free-floating algae. It clears water very fast - sometimes in hours. The downside is it's a labour-intensive setup, needs careful cleaning, and isn't something most hobbyists own. If you already have one, use it. If you don't, a UV steriliser is a better investment for long-term use.

Fixing the cause, not just the symptom

Whichever clearing method you use, the bloom comes back unless you address what caused it. Work through this list:

Light management

Set your photoperiod to 7-8 hours maximum with a timer (not manual switching). Block any direct sunlight reaching the glass - even reflected summer sun through a north-facing window can be enough. If the tank is against a window wall, consider repositioning it or fitting a blackout blind on that window.

Nutrient control

Do a 30-40% water change after you've cleared the bloom to remove the dead algae and dilute nutrients. Tip

Live plants compete directly with free-floating algae for nutrients. A well-planted tank with fast-growing stems like Egeria densa, Ceratophyllum demersum, or floating plants like Salvinia will absorb the nutrients that would otherwise feed a bloom. This isn't a complete fix on its own, but it shifts the balance in your favour.

Monitoring during and after treatment

While you're clearing a bloom, test your water daily. The parameters to watch are ammonia (should be 0 ppm), nitrite (0 ppm), and pH. As the algae die, decomposition can temporarily spike ammonia. If you see ammonia climbing above 0.25 ppm during treatment, do a 20-25% water change - but use dechlorinated water at tank temperature. Cold or chlorinated water adds stress on top of an already stressed system.

Check on your fish overnight if the bloom is dense. If they're at the surface or breathing rapidly, you have an oxygen crisis. Run the air stone on maximum, open the lid for surface gas exchange, and do a 30% water change with well-aerated water.

What most guides miss

Almost every green water article focuses on treatment and skips the awkward conversation about maintenance habits. Green water in an established tank is nearly always a signal that something in the routine has slipped - a few weeks of overfeeding, skipped water changes during a holiday, or a new window blind that came down and let in direct afternoon sun. It's not bad luck and it's not a defective filter. Trace the change in your routine and you'll usually find the cause within 30 seconds.

The second thing guides miss is the post-clearance window. Once the tank clears, the nutrient load that fed the bloom is still there. If you don't do 2-3 back-to-back weekly water changes and sort out the light, you'll be green again in two to three weeks. The clear tank isn't the finish line - it's the start of the correction period.

Is green water harmful to fish?

Not directly toxic, but a dense bloom becomes dangerous when it crashes. Decomposing algae consume dissolved oxygen rapidly - enough to suffocate fish overnight. Light blooms in an otherwise well-maintained tank are mainly cosmetic. Heavy pea-soup blooms are a genuine risk, especially in small tanks with poor surface agitation.

Will a water change fix green water?

Partially and temporarily. A large water change dilutes the algae and reduces nutrient load, but the bloom re-establishes quickly from the cells left behind unless you also fix the light exposure and nutrient problem. Water changes are useful maintenance during treatment, not a standalone cure.
