Velvet Disease in Fish: Gold Dust Symptoms and Treatment

- What it is: Velvet (Oodinium pilularis in freshwater) is a dinoflagellate parasite - part animal, part photosynthetic plant - that burrows under the skin and gills, causing a fine gold or rust-coloured dust on the fish's surface.
- Speed: It progresses faster than ich. Gills are attacked first, so fish can be in serious respiratory distress before you notice any visible dusting.
- Treatment: Copper sulfate or acriflavine are the two proven options. Raise temperature to 28-30 °C (82-86 °F), eliminate all light, and treat for a minimum of 14 days.
- Shrimp and snails: Copper kills invertebrates at therapeutic doses. Move them before you treat, or use a separate hospital tank.
- Scaleless fish caution: Loaches, catfish, and other scaleless species are highly sensitive to copper - dose at half the standard rate and watch closely.
- Free-swimming stage: Only the free-swimming dinospore is killable by medication. Trophonts buried under skin are shielded. This is why the full treatment course matters even after fish look clean.
What velvet disease actually is
Most hobbyists first notice velvet because a fish looks like it's been dusted with gold or rust-coloured powder - hence the name. That coating is thousands of individual trophonts, each one a parasite that has burrowed into the epithelial layer of your fish's skin or gills. The causative organism in freshwater tanks is Oodinium pilularis (sometimes listed as Piscinoodinium pilulare). Marine tanks deal with Amyloodinium ocellatum, which is a different species requiring slightly different management.
What makes velvet biologically unusual - and practically dangerous - is that Oodinium is a dinoflagellate. It photosynthesises. The trophonts feeding on your fish are also drawing energy from light, which is part of why darkening the tank (blocking all light for the treatment period) is a genuine therapeutic tool, not just folk advice. Starve the parasite of light and you reduce its reproductive efficiency.
The life cycle has three stages. The trophont attaches to the fish and feeds, then drops off and becomes a cyst (tomont) that divides repeatedly to produce hundreds of free-swimming dinospores. Those dinospores have roughly 24 hours to find a host before dying. That window is the only point in the cycle where medication does meaningful work.
At 25 °C (77 °F) the full cycle takes around 10-14 days; at 28-30 °C it compresses to 3-7, which is why raising temperature accelerates treatment by cycling the parasite through faster.
Spotting it early: symptoms in order of appearance
The gold dusting is actually a late-stage sign. By the time you can see it clearly, the gills have usually been under attack for days. Here is what to watch for, roughly in sequence:
- Flashing and scratching - fish rub against substrate, decor, or the glass. This happens because trophonts irritate the skin and gill filaments.
- Rapid gill movement - laboured or visibly accelerated breathing, often with fish congregating near the surface or powerhead output.
- Clamped fins - fins held tight to the body rather than fanned naturally.
- Lethargy and appetite loss - fish hang in a corner or on the bottom, lose interest in food.
- Gold or rust-coloured dust - visible under a torch (flashlight) held at a low angle to the body. Velvet's dust is finer and more yellow-gold than ich's white spots. A UV torch makes it easier to see.
- Skin peeling or tissue loss - in severe cases the damaged epithelium sloughs off, leaving ragged patches.
To check for velvet, dim the room lights and shine a small torch at a low, raking angle across the fish's flanks. The trophonts reflect light in a way that's hard to miss once you know what you're looking for. Do this whenever a fish is scratching unexplainedly - you'll catch it days earlier than waiting for visible dusting.
Treatment: what works and what doesn't
Copper sulfate
Chelated or ionic copper sulfate is the most reliably effective treatment for freshwater velvet. The target therapeutic range is 0.15-0.20 mg/L for ionic copper, or follow the manufacturer's dosing precisely for chelated products - the two forms are not interchangeable by weight. Use a copper test kit throughout treatment. Too low and it won't kill the dinospores; too high and you risk poisoning your fish.
Treatment duration should be at least 14 days from the last observed symptom, to account for multiple life cycles completing and releasing fresh dinospores. Stopping at day seven because the fish look better is one of the most common reasons for relapse.
Copper binds to organic material, substrate, and silicone. Once you dose a planted tank or a tank with a deep sand bed, the copper reading will drop as it binds to everything. This means the fish aren't receiving a consistent therapeutic dose, and residual copper will make the tank inhospitable to invertebrates for months. Treat in a bare-bottomed hospital tank wherever possible.
Acriflavine
Acriflavine (also sold as acriflavinium chloride) is a safer choice for scaleless fish, loaches, and tanks where copper feels too risky. It's less potent than copper and will stain your silicone and décor yellow, but it does work against velvet when used consistently. Dose per the product instructions, maintain darkness, and run for the full 14-day minimum. It won't harm most plants at correct doses.
Salt
Aquarium salt raises osmotic stress on parasites and can help as a supportive measure, but salt alone will not clear a velvet infection. Use it alongside your primary treatment, not instead of it.
Heat
Raising water temperature to 28-30 °C (82-86 °F) speeds up the parasite's life cycle, cycling trophonts into the vulnerable free-swimming stage faster. Increase temperature gradually - no more than 1 °C per hour - and make sure the tank is well-oxygenated, because warm water holds less dissolved oxygen.
Darkness
Cover the tank entirely with a dark cloth or card. No ambient light, no photoperiod. The photosynthetic trophonts are weakened by the absence of light, and the stress on the parasite is real. Run the full blackout for the treatment period.
Most people treat only the display tank and skip setting up a hospital tank. This means medicating the main tank with copper - which nukes your biological filter, kills any invertebrates, and leaves residual copper in the substrate for months. Isolate sick fish in a spare bare-bottomed tank if you can. It makes treatment more controllable and protects everything you're not trying to treat.
Species-specific cautions
Not all fish tolerate treatment equally, and this is where generic velvet advice falls short.
- Loaches and scaleless fish (Botia, corydoras, knifefish, eels): extremely sensitive to copper. Dose at 50% of the standard rate or switch to acriflavine entirely. Watch for signs of copper toxicity: rapid breathing, listing, loss of equilibrium.
- Discus and angelfish: tolerate copper at standard doses but are sensitive to temperature swings. Raise heat slowly.
- Bettas: can handle standard copper doses but don't tolerate salt well at high concentrations. Keep salt supplemental and low.
- Planted tanks: copper kills plants. Either move fish to a hospital tank or use acriflavine.
- Shrimp, snails, crabs: copper is lethal at therapeutic concentrations. No exceptions. Remove all invertebrates before dosing any copper-based product.
If you keep a mixed community with scaleless fish and invertebrates, you don't have a clean treatment option in the display tank. You'll need a hospital setup. The hobby often glosses over this because "just buy a hospital tank" isn't a satisfying quick answer, but there's no workaround that protects everything simultaneously. A second 20-40 litre tank costs very little and will save you a lot of grief over the years.
The main tank during treatment
Even if you're treating fish in a hospital tank, trophonts may have already dropped off into your main tank and are encysting in the substrate. The cysts can survive without a host for several days. To reduce the parasite load in the display tank while fish are being treated elsewhere:
- Raise temperature to 30 °C (86 °F) to speed up cyst development and the death of dinospores that can't find a host.
- Leave the main tank fishless for at least 6-8 weeks if you want dinospores to die off completely without reintroducing hosts.
- Vacuum the substrate thoroughly - removing detritus removes encysted tomonts.
- Keep water quality excellent. A stressed immune system makes reinfection more likely. Check your water parameters against healthy baselines and stay on top of water change frequency.
Preventing velvet: what actually makes a difference
Velvet enters your tank almost exclusively via new fish, plants, or water from an infected source. The prevention is quarantine, and it's genuinely non-negotiable if you care about your existing stock.
Quarantine every new fish for 4-6 weeks in a separate tank before introducing them to your display. Watch for flashing, breathing changes, and any visible gold dusting. Many velvet outbreaks are introduced by fish that looked healthy in the store but were carrying early-stage infections.
Stress is the other big factor. Fish with strong immune function can carry low parasite loads without developing clinical disease. The moment water quality drops, temperature swings, or overcrowding stress the fish, the balance tips. Keep your tank properly cycled (see the nitrogen cycle explained), maintain stable temperatures, and don't overstock. What most guides miss about velvet
A few things that rarely get said directly:
Gill damage is the real killer. Fish can survive moderate skin infestation, but heavy gill damage compromises oxygen uptake permanently. If a fish recovers but the gills were badly infected, it may never fully regain its previous stamina or colouration. This is why speed matters more with velvet than with most diseases.
The display tank is contaminated the moment one fish shows symptoms. Every fish in that tank has been exposed. Treat the whole population, not just the visibly affected individuals.
Medication doesn't end the problem. Water quality, quarantine discipline, and stress reduction are what keep velvet out long-term. A fish that survives one outbreak and is returned to poor conditions will be reinfected by anything that comes in later. Fix the environment, not just the fish.
Velvet is not ich. Some fishkeepers treat gold dust as a slower-moving ich and respond accordingly. Velvet moves faster, hits gills harder, and needs a more aggressive treatment response. Occasionally, in mild cases with excellent water quality and low stress, fish can suppress a light infection. But velvet on the gills is rapidly debilitating, and most untreated cases escalate. Don't wait and watch - treat early and aggressively.
How long does velvet live in a tank without fish?
Free-swimming dinospores die within 24-48 hours if they can't find a host. The encysted tomont stage is more resistant. At 30 °C (86 °F) with no fish present, a tank is generally considered safe after 6-8 weeks, though some sources extend this to 10 weeks to be conservative.
Is velvet contagious to humans or other pets?
No. Oodinium pilularis is an obligate fish parasite. It cannot infect mammals, birds, or reptiles. Wash your hands after tank work as good general hygiene practice, but there's no zoonotic risk.
My fish has white spots, not gold - is it velvet or ich?
Ich (Ichthyophthirius multifiliis) produces larger, clearly white, raised spots - like grains of salt. Velvet produces a finer, flatter, gold or rust-coloured sheen across the body. Use a torch at a low angle in a darkened room. If it still isn't clear and the fish is showing gill distress, treat for velvet first - the temperature and copper protocols overlap enough that you won't make an ich situation worse by doing so.
Do I need to treat my whole tank if only one fish is showing symptoms?
Yes. By the time one fish shows visible symptoms, free-swimming dinospores are already in the water column and other fish have been exposed. Remove obviously sick fish to a hospital tank for intensive treatment, but assume the display tank population has all been exposed and needs monitoring and treatment support.
