5 mistakes I made with my first aquarium

10 February 2026

Everyone makes them. Here are five I wish I’d avoided — and what I do now.

1. Skipping the cycle. I added fish the same week I set up the tank. Cue ammonia spike and a lot of panic. Now I cycle properly and track my tests in App-aquatic so I know when it’s safe. No shortcuts.

2. Overstocking. The shop said the tank could hold more. It couldn’t — not without daily water changes and constant stress. I use a plan now: bioload and compatibility before I buy.

3. Overfeeding. A pinch became two pinches. Cloudy water, nitrate creep, and unhappy fish. Less is more. One small feed a day (or two tiny ones) and skip a day if in doubt.

4. Not testing. I assumed the water was fine until it wasn’t. Now I test weekly and log results. Seeing the trend beats guessing. The app reminds me so I don’t forget.

5. Not planning ahead. I didn’t know which fish needed groups, which needed space, or how big they’d get. Research first — tank size, compatibility, group sizes — then buy. Your future self will thank you.

If you’re just starting, read our how to set up a fish tank and first tank guides. And track everything. It really does help.
