Good setups for a 100 litre tank

100 litres (~26 US gallons) opens up more options: larger schools, a proper centrepiece, or a dwarf cichlid project. Run combinations through our stocking calculator before you buy.

Community setup

Three schools plus bottom crew is realistic. Ten neon or cardinal tetras, eight harlequin rasboras, eight corydoras, and one or two dwarf gouramis. Or swap tetras for rummynose, rasboras for cherry barbs — match water parameters to your tap. Strong filtration and weekly changes keep things stable. Track readings in App-aquatic so you catch shifts before fish stress.

Centerpiece setup

One or two angelfish (tall tank preferred), ten to twelve rummynose or cardinal tetras, eight corys. Angels need height; avoid very small nippable species. See angelfish tank mates. Alternatively: a pair of dwarf gouramis, ten tetras, eight corys. Plenty of plants and structure for territories.

Dwarf cichlid setup

100L is a good minimum for dwarf cichlids. A pair of Apistogramma or German blue rams with a dither school (e.g. eight rummynose tetras) and six corys. Provide caves and hiding spots. See types of cichlids for South American vs African options. Water hardness and pH matter — research before choosing.

What to avoid

Full-sized African or South American cichlids need more space. Goldfish, large plecos, and big schooling fish (e.g. silver dollars) will outgrow or overload 100 litres.

Quick takeaways

  • 100 litres suits multiple schools, a centrepiece, or a dwarf cichlid project.
  • Match species to water hardness; provide structure for territorial fish.
  • Cycle first, stock gradually, keep up maintenance.
