Good setups for a 60 litre tank
60 litres (~16 US gallons) is a common starter size. Enough room for a proper school and a centrepiece, but still tight — plan carefully with a stocking calculator.
Community setup
Two small schools plus bottom dwellers fits. Six neon or cardinal tetras, six harlequin rasboras, and six corydoras (pygmy or habrosus). Add a honey or dwarf gourami if you want a focal point. Filtration and weekly water changes matter; 60L can tip quickly if you overstock. Log your tests so you see trends — App-aquatic helps with that.
Centerpiece setup
One betta or dwarf gourami, eight small tetras (neons, embers, or cardinals), and six corys. The centrepiece draws the eye; the school fills the midwater. Provide plants and hiding spots. Check neon tetras with betta for compatibility notes.
Livebearer option
Six guppies or platies, six corys, and optional nerite snails. They breed — plan for fry or have a rehoming strategy. See livebearers vs egg-layers.
Cichlids?
60 litres is too small for most cichlids. Dwarf species like Apistogramma or Ramirezi can work in a species-only or very carefully planned setup, but research heavily. For a first cichlid tank, aim for 100L+.
Quick takeaways
- 60 litres suits two schools plus corys, or a centrepiece with one school and bottom crew.
- Keep schools at six or more; avoid large or messy fish.
- Cycle fully, stock in stages, maintain regularly.
