The scale itself matters here. pH runs from 0 to 14, and it's logarithmic - a pH of 6 is ten times more acidic than a pH of 7, and a hundred times more acidic than a pH of 8. That's why a "small" drop from 7.0 to 6.0 is actually a massive chemical shift, and why chasing fractions of a unit with liquid reagents is usually counterproductive.

Understand KH before you touch your pH

KH - carbonate hardness, sometimes called alkalinity - is the buffering system that resists pH change. Water with a KH of 6-8 dKH will absorb acid or base inputs without the pH budging much. Water with a KH of 1-2 dKH has almost no resistance, so the same input causes a dramatic swing.

This is why two tanks can have the same pH reading but behave completely differently. If your KH is very low, pH can crash overnight as CO₂ builds up, then spike back up by morning as plants photosynthesise. Fish don't die from pH 6.5. Increase surface agitation

CO₂ dissolving into your water is one of the main causes of low pH, especially in densely stocked tanks overnight. Increasing surface movement - via a spray bar, airstone, or HOB filter output - drives off excess CO₂ and naturally raises pH. This costs nothing and is almost always the right first step.

Crushed coral or aragonite substrate

Adding a cup or two of crushed coral to your filter media compartment slowly dissolves in acidic water, releasing carbonates that raise both KH and pH. It's self-regulating - it stops releasing minerals once pH climbs high enough to stop dissolving it. This is the most reliable, low-drama method for tanks that run persistently acidic. Results take days to weeks, not hours.

Baking soda (for faster adjustment)

Sodium bicarbonate raises KH and pH relatively quickly. Dissolve no more than 1 teaspoon per 40 litres (10 US gallons) in a cup of tank water before adding it. Retest after 24 hours. It's a blunt tool - useful in genuine emergencies, less useful as a regular habit.

Watch out

Don't add baking soda directly to the tank as dry powder. It can create a localised pH spike that stresses or burns fish near the addition point. Always pre-dissolve it.

How to lower pH safely

Indian almond leaves (Terminalia catappa), alder cones, and other dried botanicals release tannins and humic acids that gradually soften water and lower pH. They're also genuinely beneficial for the fish species that evolved in blackwater environments.

Peat moss filtration

Placing peat moss in a mesh bag inside your filter is one of the oldest tricks in the hobby. It releases humic and fulvic acids that bind to carbonate minerals, reducing KH and pulling pH down. Effectiveness varies by brand and how fresh the peat is. Pre-soak it for 24 hours to reduce initial tannin dumping.

RO water blending

Reverse osmosis (RO) water has no minerals and a near-neutral pH. Blending it with your tap water dilutes KH and overall hardness, which allows pH to drift lower. This is the most controllable method for serious softwater setups - discus and wild-type cardinal tetras (Paracheirodon axelrodi) breeders often use near-100% RO water remineralised to specific parameters. Most fish sold in the hobby have been tank-raised for generations and will adapt to a wider pH range than their species cards suggest. The bottles labelled "pH Down" and "pH Up" sold in most fish shops typically contain phosphoric acid and sodium hydroxide respectively. The most practical thing you can do for pH stability isn't a chemical - it's consistency. 1. Is the reading stable? Test at the same time for three days. If it varies more than 0.3 units between morning and evening, surface agitation and KH stability are your first moves.

2. What is your KH? Below 3 dKH means you have no buffer - add crushed coral or a small dose of baking soda before anything else.

3. Do your fish actually need different pH? Check species origin, not just the number on your test kit. If your fish are eating, displaying normal behaviour, and not showing stress signs, pH that's slightly outside a textbook range is probably fine.

4. How far out are you? A community tank sitting at 7.8 when fish prefer 7.2 is not a crisis. A discus tank at 8.0 when fish need 6.5 is. The magnitude of the gap determines the urgency.

5. Are you making changes slowly enough? Whatever method you choose, target no more than 0.2 pH units of change per 24 hours. Fish can adjust to a wide range of pH - they can't adjust to sudden shifts.
