Best Nano Fish for Small Tanks Under 40 Litres

- Minimum group sizes matter: Most nano schooling fish need 8+ individuals to feel secure - fewer and you'll see stress, hiding, and faded colour.
- Cycle first, fish second: A 40 L tank with an uncycled filter will crash fast. There's no shortcut - cycling takes 4-6 weeks regardless of tank size.
- Soft, warm water is non-negotiable for most species here: Chilli rasboras, ember tetras, and green neon tetras all need pH 5.5-7.0 and temperatures of 24-28 °C (75-82 °F).
- Pick one focal species: A 40 L tank done well holds one nano species in a proper group, maybe a cleanup crew. It does not hold five species "because they're small."

- Cherry shrimp are a valid alternative to fish: A shrimp-only 40 L is more forgiving and more rewarding than a crowded fish tank.
Why nano tanks fail - and what actually works
Small tanks are not easier than large ones. The margin for error is just smaller. A 40 L tank holds less than a fifth of the water in a typical 200 L community setup, which means ammonia spikes faster, temperature swings hit harder, and a single overfed evening can foul the water before your next test.
Most failures come down to one thing: people treat small volume as permission to skip the fundamentals. They skip the cycle, they overstock with species that were described online as "nano fish," and they wonder why everything dies in week three. The fish listed in this guide can genuinely thrive in a well-run 40 L - but the word "well-run" is doing a lot of work there.
The nano fish hobby is partially driven by marketing. "Nano" on a fish label doesn't mean easy. Several species on every nano list - including some sold in pet shops as "perfect for small tanks" - need water chemistry that most tap supplies don't provide and group sizes that a 40 L barely fits. Go in with realistic expectations.
The species worth keeping in under 40 litres
Chilli rasbora (Boraras brigittae)
The best pure nano fish available. Adults reach just 2 cm, they're genuinely stunning in a planted tank, and a group of 10-12 fits comfortably in 30-40 L without straining your bioload. Keep them at 24-28 °C (75-82 °F), pH 4.5-6.5, and very soft water - ideally below 8 dGH. They won't colour up properly in hard alkaline tap water, no matter what you try.
Keep a minimum of 8. Ten is better. These are shoaling fish and lone individuals or pairs sit in corners and fade. Pair them with cherry shrimp or pygmy corydoras for a tank that uses every level of the water column.
Buying 4-5 chilli rasboras because they're tiny. They still need a group to feel secure. Under 8 fish, you'll get washed-out colour and chronic stress. Start with 10 and don't second-guess the number.
Ember tetra (Hyphessobrycon amandae)
Slightly hardier than chilli rasboras on water chemistry - they tolerate pH up to 7.5 and moderate hardness - but still need warmth (24-28 °C / 75-82 °F) and a planted tank. Adults hit 2 cm. A group of 10 in a 30-40 L with some floating plants and a sponge filter is genuinely one of the most satisfying setups in the hobby.
They're peaceful enough to mix with pygmy corydoras or cherry shrimp, and they'll breed in a mature, stable tank without you doing anything special.
Pygmy corydoras (Corydoras pygmaeus and C. hastatus)
The only corydoras species that genuinely belong in a 40 L setup. Most other cory species need more floor space. Pygmy corys stay around 2.5-3 cm, are mid-water swimmers as much as bottom dwellers, and need a fine sand substrate - gravel damages their barbels over time.
Keep 8 as an absolute minimum, and give them a temperature of 22-26 °C (72-79 °F) with pH 6.0-7.5. They're adaptable compared to the rasboras, which makes them a decent first nano fish. Feed sinking micro pellets and frozen daphnia or baby brine shrimp two or three times a week.
If you want both pygmy corys and a mid-water schooler, run a species check on temperature overlap first. Ember tetras (24-28 °C) sit at the top of the pygmy cory range (22-26 °C). A compromise of 25 °C works fine for both.
Celestial pearl danio (Danio margaritatus)
One of the genuinely beautiful nano fish - males are deep blue-green with pearl spots and vivid red-orange fins. They stay under 2.5 cm and tolerate a wider pH range (6.5-7.5) than the rasboras. Temperature 20-26 °C (68-79 °F).
The catch: males are territorial with each other. In a 40 L you can keep a group of 8-10 with a skewed ratio of two females to every male. More males than that and you'll see fin damage and chronic chasing. Heavy planting with sight-breaks is mandatory, not optional.
Scarlet badis (Dario dario)
Not for beginners, but worth including because they're genuinely fascinating fish when kept correctly. Males reach 2 cm and are intensely coloured - red and blue banding that rivals any marine fish. Females are smaller and plain.
The problem: scarlet badis are slow, deliberate feeders that often refuse dry food entirely. You'll need to supply live or frozen small invertebrates - micro worms, baby brine shrimp, daphnia - regularly. Keep them with nothing boisterous. Ember tetras will out-compete them at feeding time. A species-only 20-30 L or a carefully selected pairing with cherry shrimp is realistic for most keepers.
Green neon tetra (Paracheirodon simulans)
Often confused with the common neon tetra (P. innesi), the green neon is smaller (max 2.5 cm vs 4 cm), more intensely coloured under the right lighting, and more demanding on water. You need pH 4.0-6.5 and soft water (under 5 dGH) for them to stay healthy long-term. In hard tap water they slowly decline over months.
If your tap water is suitable or you're willing to use RO water blended with remineralised water, a group of 12 green neons in a planted 40 L is spectacular. If not, ember tetras or chilli rasboras are better choices with similar looks.
Sparkling gourami (Trichopsis pumila)
A labyrinth fish that reaches 3.5-4 cm and produces an audible clicking sound when communicating - one of the genuinely unique things you can experience with nano fish. Keep 2-4 in a 30-40 L at 24-28 °C (75-82 °F), pH 6.0-7.5. They need a tight-fitting lid because labyrinth fish breathe surface air and can be damaged by cold drafts. Flow should be gentle - a sponge filter or very low-output hang-on-back.
Males will spar, so in a 40 L you're better off keeping one male with two females or keeping a single male with other peaceful nano species.
Cherry shrimp (Neocaridina davidi)
Not fish, but included because a shrimp colony in a mature planted tank is often more stable and more interesting than any fish-only nano setup. Cherry shrimp tolerate pH 6.5-8.0 and temperature 18-26 °C (64-79 °F). They breed readily and form a self-sustaining colony if the tank is established and copper-free.
Never dose a shrimp tank with any medication unless you've verified it's invertebrate-safe. Most copper-based treatments, and some plant fertilisers, will kill an entire colony within hours.
Fish and cherry shrimp can coexist - but only with small, peaceful species and plenty of plant cover. Sparkling gouramis and scarlet badis will eat juvenile shrimp. Even ember tetras pick off shrimplets. Factor this in if you want a breeding shrimp colony alongside fish.
Stocking a 40 litre - what the numbers actually look like
The old "1 inch of fish per gallon" rule has no basis in biology. What matters is the bioload relative to your filter's capacity and the swimming space relative to the species' behaviour. For a 40 L planted tank with weekly water changes, realistic stocking looks like this:
- 10-12 chilli rasboras or ember tetras as a single-species display
- 8-10 ember tetras + 8 pygmy corydoras (temperature-matched, gentle bioload)
- 8 celestial pearl danios with skewed sex ratio (2F:1M)
- 1 male sparkling gourami + 8 ember tetras
- Species-only scarlet badis colony: 1 male, 2-3 females
- Cherry shrimp only: 20-30 shrimp, self-regulating colony

Water chemistry and parameters for nano fish
Most nano fish on this list come from Southeast Asian blackwater rivers or mountain streams. Their native water is soft, slightly acidic, and warm. That doesn't mean you need a lab setup, but it does mean you need to know what comes out of your tap before you decide which fish to buy.
Check your aquarium water parameters against the species you want. If your tap water is consistently above pH 7.5 or above 15 dGH, chilli rasboras and green neon tetras will be fighting your water chemistry for their entire lives. Ember tetras, pygmy corydoras, and cherry shrimp are meaningfully more forgiving.
For blackwater species in hard-water areas, adding botanicals (dried Indian almond leaves, alder cones) alongside a peat-filtered water source lowers pH naturally. This is the approach many experienced keepers use rather than fighting hard tap water with chemicals.
Filtration, flow, and the nano tank reality
Most nano fish - especially chilli rasboras, sparkling gouramis, and scarlet badis - come from slow-moving or still water. A filter producing strong flow will stress them, prevent natural behaviour, and for labyrinth fish, interfere with nest building.
A sponge filter run off a small air pump is the most practical choice for tanks under 40 L housing these species. It provides biological filtration, gentle surface movement for oxygenation, and zero risk of small fish being sucked against an intake. Hang-on-back filters work if you baffle the output to reduce flow.
Whatever filter you use, it needs to be fully cycled before fish go in. In a 40 L, an ammonia spike from uncycled media can reach dangerous levels within 24 hours of adding fish.

What most nano fish guides miss
Most guides list species and minimum sizes without telling you the things that actually determine success:
Acclimation takes longer in small tanks. The temperature and chemistry difference between your bag water and your tank water matters more in 40 L because there's less buffer. Float the bag for 20 minutes, then drip-acclimate over 45-60 minutes for sensitive species like chilli rasboras and green neon tetras.
Feeding precision matters. Overfeeding a 40 L tank by even a small amount elevates ammonia faster than a large tank dilutes it. Feed what fish consume in 2-3 minutes, twice a day. Remove uneaten food within 5 minutes.
Heat kills nano tanks in summer. A 40 L with no surface agitation, a warm room, and a bright light can hit 30 °C+ on a hot day. Most nano fish start experiencing heat stress above 29-30 °C (84-86 °F). Keep a clip-on fan pointing at the water surface as a cheap countermeasure in summer. Know how often to do water changes and increase frequency during hot spells.
Visual reference isn't enough for sexing. Celestial pearl danios and sparkling gouramis require a specific sex ratio to prevent aggression. Most sellers can't reliably sex juveniles. Buy more individuals than you think you need, observe for a few weeks, and rehome surplus males if necessary.
