Changing from gravel to sand
Do it in stages to protect your cycle and reduce stress.
- Your cycle is safe: the vast majority of beneficial bacteria live in your filter media, not your substrate - keep the filter running and wet throughout the entire swap.
- Do it in stages: remove gravel in thirds or halves rather than all at once to minimise disturbance and keep the tank stable.
- Rinse sand obsessively: pool filter sand or aquarium sand needs repeated rinsing until the runoff is nearly clear - skipping this turns your tank white for days.
- Watch ammonia for a week: a mini-cycle is possible if your gravel was carrying a bacterial load; test daily and do small water changes if ammonia climbs above 0.25 ppm.
- Bottom dwellers benefit most: corydoras, loaches, and most plecos do noticeably better on smooth sand than on sharp gravel edges.
- Budget a full afternoon: this job done properly takes 3-5 hours; rushing it is how people lose fish.
Why switch from gravel to sand at all?
Gravel is the default substrate sold with most starter tanks, but it has real drawbacks that become obvious once you start keeping bottom-dwelling fish. The gaps between gravel pieces trap uneaten food and waste, which rots, spikes ammonia, and creates anaerobic pockets that produce hydrogen sulphide. Sand compacts more evenly, is easier to siphon clean, and is far kinder on the bodies and barbels of fish like Corydoras, Pangio (kuhli loaches), and Botia species.
There's also an aesthetic argument: a fine sand bed - particularly white or natural buff tones - makes fish colours pop in a way gravel rarely does. That said, the swap is a real disruption to an established tank, and doing it carelessly can crash your water quality. Done properly, it's straightforward.
What you need before you start
Get everything ready before you move a single piece of gravel. Scrambling for equipment mid-swap with fish in buckets is how accidents happen.
- Sand: pool filter sand (silica-based, typically 0.5-1 mm grain) is the most cost-effective option and works excellently. Branded aquarium sands work too but cost significantly more. Avoid play sand - the grain size is often inconsistent and it can contain fine particles that clog filters permanently.
- Buckets: at least two large ones (20 litres / 5 gallons each). One for old tank water to hold fish if needed, one for rinsing sand.
- An air stone and battery-powered air pump: if you're moving fish to buckets, they need oxygenation.
- A siphon or gravel vacuum: you'll use this to remove gravel and add water back carefully.
- An ammonia test kit: liquid reagent test, not strips. You'll be testing daily for the next week.
- A cup or small jug: for placing sand carefully without creating a sandstorm inside the tank.
Calculate how much sand you need before buying. As a rough guide, 1 kg of sand covers roughly 100 cm² at a depth of 1 cm. For most tanks a 2-3 cm (about 1 inch) sand bed is ideal. Go deeper than 5 cm and you risk anaerobic dead zones unless you have Malaysian trumpet snails actively turning the substrate.
Rinse sand in a bucket by filling it with water, stirring vigorously, then pouring off the cloudy water. You'll need to repeat this 6-10 times. Sand that looks clean after three rinses will still cloud your tank - keep going until the water pours off nearly clear.
Do you need to move your fish?
This is genuinely debated among experienced keepers. For a small tank under 60 litres, moving fish to a holding bucket is probably the safer call - the disturbance in a small volume is significant. For larger tanks (100 litres and above) with robust fish like tetras, barbs, or cichlids, many people do the swap with fish in the tank and report no problems.
The case for moving fish: less stress from the stirred-up water, easier access to work in the tank, lower risk of accidentally trapping a fish under a bucket of substrate.
The case for leaving them in: moving fish is itself stressful, particularly for shy or scaleless species. The choice isn't obvious - base it on your specific fish, tank size, and how calm you can keep the water during the swap.
If you do move fish, use water taken directly from the tank (not fresh tap water), run an air stone in the bucket, and keep them covered - fish jump when stressed.
Never put fish in a bucket of freshly dechlorinated tap water. The temperature difference and chemistry shift can be more stressful than the substrate swap itself. Always use existing tank water.
The actual swap: step by step
1. Reduce water level
Siphon out roughly 30-40% of your tank water into clean buckets, keeping this water for refilling later (it preserves your tank chemistry and temperature). A lower water level means less resistance when you're scooping gravel and less displacement when you add sand.
2. Remove gravel in stages
Don't remove all the gravel at once. Work in thirds - scoop one section out, rinse or set aside, then move to the next. This is slower but it keeps the tank less disturbed and gives you room to work without sloshing water everywhere. Use a cup or your hands (rinsed, no soap) rather than a siphon for the bulk removal - vacuuming gravel through a siphon is slow and unnecessary here.
As you remove gravel, you'll stir up trapped waste. That's expected and normal. Your filter will clear it within a few hours.
3. Rinse the tank bottom
Once the gravel is out, siphon off any waste and detritus sitting on the bare glass. This is your one chance to start clean.
4. Add the sand
Place a clean plate or plastic bag flat on the tank bottom. Pour sand slowly onto it using a cup - this diffuses the impact and stops sand from billowing through the whole water column. Once you have a few centimetres down, you can remove the plate and fill in the remaining areas directly. Work slowly. You won't keep it perfectly clear, but you can keep it manageable.
Aim for a flat, even layer of 2-3 cm. Sand settles over the first 24 hours, so don't obsess over levelling it perfectly now.
5. Refill and restart
Pour saved tank water back in first, then top up with dechlorinated fresh water that matches your tank temperature closely (within 1-2°C / 2-4°F). Pour slowly against the glass or use a plate to avoid disturbing the sand bed. Restart your filter.
The water will be cloudy. This is fine particles of sand in suspension - not a water quality problem. It clears within 12-48 hours as your filter catches up. Resist the urge to do a large water change to speed this up; it just slows down the settling.
Cleaning filter media during the same week as the substrate swap. Your filter bacteria are already dealing with disruption from the swap - don't reduce their numbers simultaneously. If your filter media genuinely needs a rinse, wait at least two weeks.
Managing your cycle through the swap
The question everyone worries about: will this crash my cycle? Understand the nitrogen cycle and you'll see why the answer is usually no - but "usually" is doing real work in that sentence.
The majority of your nitrifying bacteria (Nitrosomonas and Nitrospira species) live in your filter media, specifically in the surface area of sponge, ceramic rings, or bio-media. Substrate carries some bacteria, but it's a secondary colony. As long as your filter keeps running and stays wet, you keep most of your cycle intact.
Where problems occur: if your gravel was very deep (5 cm+), heavily seeded over years, and your filter media is old or underpopulated, removing it can cause a measurable bacterial drop. This typically shows up as a mild ammonia spike - 0.25-0.5 ppm - over the 3-5 days after the swap rather than a full cycle crash.
Test ammonia and nitrite daily for a week. If ammonia climbs above 0.5 ppm, do a 20-25% water change. Feed lightly for the first few days - less food means less ammonia load while your bacteria re-establish. Most guides say "your cycle will be fine" without qualification. The truth is it depends on how established your gravel was, how large your filter is relative to your bioload, and whether you do anything else disruptive that week. The swap is low risk, not zero risk. Test your water. Don't assume.
Sand depth and long-term maintenance
A 2-3 cm sand bed is the maintenance sweet spot. It's deep enough for bottom-dwelling fish to sift through comfortably, and shallow enough that detritus sits on top where you can vacuum it rather than falling between grains and rotting.
At 4-5 cm the bed starts trapping waste in the lower layers. Beyond 5 cm you risk anaerobic pockets producing hydrogen sulphide - a colourless gas that smells of rotten eggs and is acutely toxic to fish. If you want a deeper sand bed for planted tanks or specific biotopes, add a colony of Malaysian trumpet snails (Melanoides tuberculata). They burrow constantly through the substrate, oxygenating it and preventing dangerous gas buildup.
Vacuum sand differently from gravel. Hold your siphon just above the surface rather than pushing it into the substrate - let the current pull up detritus without sucking up the sand itself. Review your water change routine if you're finding waste building up faster than expected; sand surfaces make waste more visible, which can be alarming at first but is actually a good thing.
If your filter intake sits close to the sand bed, wrap it with a fine sponge pre-filter. Fine sand particles can pass through standard intake guards and damage impellers over time.
Which fish benefit most from the switch
The honest answer is most fish don't care much either way - mid-water and surface swimmers interact with the substrate rarely. But for bottom dwellers, the difference is significant.
Corydoras species are the clearest example. On coarse gravel their barbels - the whisker-like sensory organs around their mouth - erode and become infected. On fine sand they sift and forage naturally, barbels intact. The same applies to most loach species and any catfish that spends time nosing along the bottom.
Substrate-spawning fish like Apistogramma cichlids or Kribensis (Pelvicachromis pulcher) also show more natural breeding behaviour on sand. It more closely matches their natural environments and they'll dig pits and spawn more readily.

Unlikely, but watch for a mild ammonia spike over the first week. Your filter media holds the bulk of your nitrifying bacteria - keep it running and don't clean it during the swap. Test ammonia and nitrite daily for 7 days. If either reads above 0.5 ppm, do a 20-25% water change and feed lightly until levels settle. How much sand do I need?
Aim for a 2-3 cm depth across the tank floor. As a rough guide, 1 kg of sand covers approximately 100 cm² at 1 cm depth, so a standard 60 cm × 30 cm tank base (1,800 cm²) needs around 4-5 kg for a 2-3 cm bed. When in doubt, buy slightly more than you think you need - unused, dry sand stores indefinitely.
How long will the water stay cloudy after adding sand?
Typically 12-48 hours for most aquarium and pool filter sands, assuming you rinsed thoroughly beforehand. The cloudiness is fine silica particles in suspension - harmless but slow to settle. Running a fine mechanical filter pad and resisting the urge to do big water changes (which just stirs things up again) speeds clearing. If water is still murky after 72 hours, check your filter flow isn't being restricted by sand particles.
Can I mix old gravel with new sand?
Technically yes, but it's not worth it. Gravel and sand separate over time - gravel sinks, sand rises unevenly - and the mix creates exactly the kind of gap-and-pocket structure you were trying to get away from. If you want the bacterial benefit of your old gravel, put a handful in a mesh bag inside your filter for a few weeks while your sand bed seeds itself, then remove it.
Do plants grow well in sand?
Most rooted plants grow fine in sand with root tabs pushed into the substrate near the roots. Sand itself has no nutritional value, but root tabs supply iron, potassium, and trace minerals directly where the roots are. Plants that feed primarily through the water column - most mosses, java fern, anubias - are completely unaffected by the substrate type and don't even need to be planted in it.
