Before you start

Most beneficial bacteria live in your filter media, not only substrate. Keep filter media wet and running as normal throughout the swap.

Safe method

  1. Rinse new sand thoroughly until water runs mostly clear.
  2. Prepare buckets and save old tank water for temporary fish holding if needed.
  3. Remove gravel in sections, not all at once when possible.
  4. Add sand slowly using a cup or bag to limit clouding.
  5. Restart filtration and monitor ammonia/nitrite daily for a week.

How to avoid mini-cycle issues

  • Do not overclean filter media during the same week.
  • Feed lightly for a few days after the swap.
  • Keep up small water changes if parameters rise.

Fish safety notes

Most fish adapt well to sand. Bottom dwellers often prefer smooth sand to sharp gravel.
