Cryptocoryne wendtii is one of the genuinely easy aquarium plants - not "easy if you also dose CO₂, use specialist substrate, and keep your parameters perfect," but easy in the real sense. It grows in low light, tolerates a wide pH range, survives neglect that would kill most plants, and eventually spreads into dense, natural-looking clumps without constant intervention.
It originates from Sri Lanka, where it grows in slow-moving rivers and streams with soft to moderately hard water. That background explains why it's so flexible in aquariums: it evolved in variable conditions and has the physiology to match. The leaves come in several colour forms - green, brown, and reddish-bronze being the most common - and the texture ranges from smooth to heavily hammered or wavy depending on the cultivar. Setting up for success: substrate and planting
Cryptocoryne wendtii is a heavy root feeder. Most of its nutrient uptake happens through the substrate, not the water column, which means what you plant it in matters more than what you dose into the water.
Fine-grained substrates - plain aquarium gravel, sand, or nutrient-rich planted substrates - all work. If you're using inert gravel or sand, add root tabs when you plant and refresh them every 3-4 months. Plant with the crown (the point where leaves emerge from the rhizome) sitting just at the substrate surface - not buried, not floating above it. Bury the roots completely. A common mistake is planting too shallow; the plant then uproots itself or sits unstable until it establishes. Equally, burying the crown causes it to rot.

Crypt melt: what it is, why it happens, and what to do
Crypt melt is the single thing most new Cryptocoryne keepers panic about, and it's also the thing most guides either catastrophise or dismiss without explaining properly.
Here's what actually happens. Cryptocoryne leaves are produced in response to specific environmental conditions - light intensity, water chemistry, humidity, temperature. When the plant was grown (usually emersed, meaning partially or fully out of water, in a nursery), it produced leaves suited to those conditions. Your tank is different. When you plant it, the old leaves are no longer the right leaves for the new environment, and the plant discards them by dissolving them from the edges inward. It's not dying. It's restructuring.
The melt can look alarming - leaves going transparent, turning to mush, disappearing entirely over a week or two. Leave it alone. Do not uproot the plant to inspect it. Do not move it to another tank. The rhizome and roots are fine as long as you don't disturb them. New leaves adapted to your conditions will emerge from the crown, usually within 3-6 weeks. The one situation where melt becomes a real problem is if the decomposing leaves cause an ammonia spike in a small, lightly filtered, or uncycled tank. Light requirements
Cryptocoryne wendtii is one of the few aquarium plants that genuinely prefers low to moderate light. Under high-intensity lighting, the plant doesn't grow faster - it tends to grow more compact and paler, while algae growth around it increases significantly.
Aim for 6-8 hours of light per day at low to moderate intensity. If you're using an LED fixture, most "planted tank" LEDs run at 40-60% intensity for this species. Brown and red cultivars develop better colour under moderate light than in very dim conditions. If you want the reddish pigmentation, give it a bit more light - but don't chase the colour by pushing intensity too high.
Most low-tech planted tank guides tell you that any light will do for crypts. That's mostly true, but genuinely dim tanks - office lighting, shaded corners, tanks with very little artificial light - will produce slow, weak, yellowing plants. "Low light tolerant" means it won't die in low light, not that it thrives in near-darkness. Give it a proper light source on a timer and it'll reward you.
Water parameters
The flexibility of Cryptocoryne wendtii with water chemistry is one of its real selling points. It tolerates pH from 6.0 to 7.8, general hardness from very soft to moderately hard (2-15 dGH), and temperatures between 22-28°C (72-82°F). Most municipal tap water in the UK, US, and Europe falls comfortably within these ranges once dechlorinated.
What the plant doesn't tolerate well is instability. Swinging parameters - pH that fluctuates by more than 0.5 units, temperature changes of more than 2°C in 24 hours, or sudden hardness changes from water changes - can trigger melt in established plants and stall new ones.

Fertilisation and CO₂
CO₂ injection is not needed for C. wendtii. It will grow without it, and adding CO₂ to a low-tech tank that isn't also optimised for light and nutrients often just feeds algae rather than improving plant growth.
Fertilisation is where many people underdo it. Because the plant feeds primarily through its roots, root tabs are the most effective form of supplementation. Push a root tab into the substrate about 5 cm from the base of the plant every 3-4 months. This alone is enough in most setups.
Liquid fertilisers help more if you have multiple plants or a heavily planted tank where the substrate is being depleted across the board. Don't overdose chasing faster growth - it won't significantly accelerate this plant, and excess nutrients cause algae.

Propagation and spreading
Cryptocoryne wendtii propagates by producing runners - horizontal stems that extend through the substrate and sprout new plantlets. You don't need to do anything to encourage this. Once the plant is established (usually after 2-3 months), it will begin spreading on its own.
When a daughter plant has 4-5 leaves of its own, you can sever the runner connecting it to the mother plant with scissors and either leave it in place or relocate it. The new plant is already rooted and will continue growing with minimal disturbance.

What most care guides get wrong about Cryptocoryne wendtii
Most guides treat "easy" as meaning "no thought required." That's not quite right. C. wendtii is forgiving, but it rewards a bit of understanding.
The biggest missed point is stability over perfection. This plant doesn't need ideal parameters - it needs consistent ones. A tank running at pH 7.5 with moderate hardness where those values never fluctuate will produce healthier, faster-growing crypts than a tank with "perfect" soft water that varies by 0.5 pH units every few days.
The second missed point is substrate nutrition. Most beginners are told to focus on liquid ferts and CO₂ because that's what the planted tank hobby tends to promote. For crypts specifically, root tabs and a decent substrate will outperform expensive liquid dosing every time.
Third: people uproot their crypts too quickly after melt. The number of healthy plants thrown away because someone assumed melt meant death is significant.
