Common mistake

Most people reach for aquarium salt as their first response to dropsy. Aquarium salt (sodium chloride) raises osmotic pressure in freshwater, which can actually worsen fluid retention in a fish whose kidneys are already failing. Epsom salt is the correct choice here. They are not interchangeable.

Prognosis: what to expect honestly
