Guide
Guppy care guide
Guppies are colourful, easy livebearers. Tank size, water, feeding, and what to do when they breed.
Tank size and setup
10 gallons minimum for a small group; 20 gallons gives more room. Heater (72–78 °F) and filter. They like plants and open swimming area. Ensure the tank is cycled before adding guppies. See set up a fish tank.
Water and feeding
Keep ammonia and nitrite at zero and nitrate low. Guppies tolerate a range of pH. Feed quality flake or pellet plus occasional veg or small live/frozen food. Avoid overfeeding. Log parameters in App-aquatic to spot issues early.
Breeding
Guppies breed very easily. If you keep males and females, you will get fry. Either plan for rehoming, extra tanks, or keep only males (or only females). See breeding.
Tank mates
Peaceful community fish: platies, mollies, tetras, corydoras. Avoid fin-nippers; guppies have long fins. See community tank fish.
Quick takeaways
- 10+ gallons, heater and filter, cycled tank.
- Stable water; varied diet; they breed prolifically.
- Peaceful with other non-nippy community fish.
