Aquarium heater size guide

Match watts to volume and room temperature; place for even flow.

Quick answer
  • Rule of thumb: Start near 1 watt per 2 litres of water when raising room-temperature water to tropical targets; size up in cold rooms or for tall tanks with poor circulation.
  • Placement: Near filter outflow for even heat; use a thermostat and thermometer.
  • Large tanks: Two smaller heaters can be safer than one huge unit (redundancy).

Why size matters

Undersized heaters run constantly and may fail to reach target temperature. Oversized heaters are fine if controlled by a reliable thermostat.

Cold rooms

If your room is cold in winter, increase wattage or add insulation around the tank (not blocking ventilation).

Safety

Unplug during water changes below the heater line. Use a heater guard with large or boisterous fish.

Can a heater be too big?

If thermostat-controlled, a higher wattage is usually fine — it heats faster then cycles off.

Do I need two heaters?

Large tanks often use two for even distribution and backup if one fails.
