What hornwort actually is

Ceratophyllum demersum is a rootless, fully submerged aquatic plant found on every inhabited continent. It's not a true aquatic plant in the botanical sense - it belongs to its own order, Ceratophyllales, sitting somewhere between mosses and flowering plants. That evolutionary quirk explains a lot of its behaviour: it doesn't anchor itself via roots, it doesn't rely on sediment nutrients, and it survives a wider range of conditions than almost anything else you'd put in a tank.

In the aquarium trade it's sometimes sold as "coontail" - a nod to the dense, bushy whorls of needle-like leaves that cluster at the stem tips. Those whorls are what make it such an effective water purifier: enormous surface area, constantly exposed to the water column, pulling in nitrates, phosphates, and CO₂ directly through the leaves.

Care requirements

Light

Hornwort grows fastest under medium to high light - roughly 30-50 PAR at the plant's position. That said, it will survive in low-light tanks; it just won't grow as aggressively or outcompete algae as effectively. If you're running a basic LED strip on a budget tank, hornwort will still do something useful. Give it more light and it becomes a weed in the best possible sense.

Photoperiod matters more than intensity. Eight to ten hours per day is the sweet spot. Running lights longer than twelve hours won't make hornwort grow faster - it will just feed algae.

Temperature

The usable range is genuinely wide: 15-30°C (59-86°F). This makes hornwort one of the few plants that works in unheated tanks, coldwater setups with goldfish or white cloud mountain minnows, and tropical community tanks alike. The ideal range for steady, healthy growth is 20-26°C (68-79°F). Push above 28°C consistently and growth becomes erratic, with more needle drop and thinner stems.

pH and hardness

pH 6.0-7.5 covers the vast majority of community fish setups. Hornwort prefers slightly hard, alkaline water - which is convenient, because most tap water in the UK and North America leans that way. It also performs well in moderately soft water. The plant is not fussy, but dramatic swings in either direction will trigger shedding.

CO₂ and fertilisation

No injected CO₂ needed. Hornwort is one of the most efficient users of dissolved CO₂ in the water column, happily pulling it from ambient levels that would starve slower plants. In a heavily stocked tank, it will actually compete with algae for CO₂ and usually win.

Liquid fertiliser isn't strictly necessary either, but a weekly dose of an all-in-one fertiliser will produce noticeably thicker, darker stems. Without any ferts, hornwort yellows slowly from the tips over months - still alive, just less impressive. The plant feeds predominantly through the water column, so root tabs do nothing for it.

Tip

In a well-stocked tank, hornwort often doesn't need any supplemental fertiliser at all. Fish waste provides enough nitrogen, phosphorus, and trace elements to keep it thriving. Save the fertiliser budget for your more demanding plants.

Placement and planting

Hornwort has no true roots - just fine, root-like structures called rhizoids that mostly serve as anchors, not nutrient absorbers. You have two options: float it or anchor it.

Floating gives you faster growth and more visible nitrate uptake because the plant stays near the light. The downside is it can cover the surface and block light to lower plants, and it has a habit of drifting into filter intakes.

Anchoring in the background works fine. You can weight the stems gently with plant weights or just tuck them loosely into coarse substrate. Don't bury more than a centimetre or two - deep burial rots the stem and the plant pulls free anyway. Many people use a plant weight near the base and let it stand upright like a column of green, trimming from the top as it grows.

The needle drop - what's actually happening

This is the thing nobody warns you about adequately. Move hornwort from one tank to another, change your water parameters significantly, or even just alter the flow pattern - and within twenty-four to forty-eight hours, needles start dropping like a conifer in drought. The water looks like someone shook a pine tree over it.

This is a stress response, not a death spiral. The plant is jettisoning leaves it can no longer maintain while it adjusts to new conditions. New growth usually appears within a week if the tank is stable. The mistake most people make is panic-trimming at this point, removing healthy stem material and setting the plant back further.

Watch out

Dropped needles accumulate fast and can clog filter intakes or decompose in substrate, spiking ammonia. During a needle-drop event, increase water changes and check your filter flow daily. A fine mesh bag over the intake is worth it short-term.

To minimise drop when introducing new hornwort: match the new tank's temperature and pH as closely as possible, float it initially for a week before anchoring, and don't change anything else in the tank at the same time. Gradual acclimatisation cuts shedding dramatically.

Hornwort as a functional tool

Nitrate control

Fast-growing stem plants are the most effective biological nitrate sinks in the hobby, and hornwort grows faster than almost all of them. A healthy clump in a moderately lit tank will measurably reduce nitrate accumulation between water changes - not eliminate the need for changes, but meaningfully extend the window. If your nitrates are climbing from 0 to 40 ppm in a week and you add a decent mass of hornwort, you'll likely see that drop to 0-20 ppm over the same period.

For this to work, you need to be trimming and removing the trimmings from the tank. If you let old growth die back in the water, the plant releases nutrients back as it decomposes - negating the point. Regular trimming is non-negotiable. Fry and shrimp refuge

A floating mat of hornwort is one of the best fry survival tools you can use. The dense needle whorls trap infusoria and microorganisms that newly-hatched fry feed on, while also providing cover from adults. Shrimp colonies thrive in hornwort for the same reason - constant grazing on biofilm between the needles. If you're breeding livebearers or keeping a shrimp tank, a floating clump is low-effort and high-return.

Cycling support

Hornwort won't replace the bacterial colonisation process, but it does reduce ammonia and nitrite stress on fish during a fish-in cycle by competing for nutrients directly. Trimming and propagation

Cut the stem anywhere - every cutting becomes a new plant. There's no complicated propagation here. Snip a 10-15 cm section, float or anchor it, and it will grow. The cut end may look rough for a few days before new growth begins.

How often you trim depends entirely on your tank and light level. In a well-lit tank with decent nutrients, trimming every two weeks is realistic. In lower light, monthly may be sufficient. The plant tells you when it's time: when stems start shading lower plants or blocking surface light, cut it back.

Don't compost hornwort trimmings near natural waterways. Ceratophyllum demersum is invasive in many regions outside its native range. Dry it out completely before disposal.

Honest take

Hornwort is not a beautiful plant. It won't anchor a planted tank layout the way Rotala or Ludwigia will. It looks like a green bottle-brush. But it does its actual job - water purification, nitrate export, fry cover - better than almost anything in the hobby at this price point. Most serious fish keepers have it in at least one tank even if they don't advertise it.

Compatible fish and tank mates

Hornwort suits most community fish. It's particularly valuable in tanks with heavy bioloads: goldfish, cichlids, or densely stocked livebearers. The plant copes with the nitrate output that would stress more delicate species.

The one caveat: goldfish and Buenos Aires tetras will eat it. Goldfish especially will demolish hornwort given time - though the plant grows fast enough to stay ahead of moderate goldfish grazing, which is more than you can say for most plants. If your goldfish are large and numerous, the hornwort may eventually lose.

Common mistake

Planting hornwort deep in fine-grained substrate and expecting it to root properly. It won't - the stem will rot at the burial point within a few weeks. Use coarse gravel or sand with only the base lightly anchored, or float it entirely.

Troubleshooting

Yellowing leaves

The most common cause is nutrient deficiency - specifically iron or nitrogen. Add a weekly liquid fertiliser dose and watch for improvement over two weeks. If the tank is lightly stocked and you're doing frequent water changes, you may actually be exporting nutrients faster than fish waste replaces them. Ease back to appropriately-sized water changes rather than excessive ones.

Brown or slimy stems

Bacterial rot, usually caused by poor flow around the stems or damage from rough handling. Remove affected sections immediately - rot spreads. Improve circulation and give the remaining plant some space. Cramming too much hornwort into a tight corner kills it faster than anything else.

Not growing at all

Check light duration and intensity first. Then check whether the tank has been recently treated with algaecides or copper-based medications - hornwort is sensitive to both and will stall or die back after treatment. Copper is the more dangerous one; even low doses from certain anti-parasite treatments can devastate plant growth for weeks.

Why is my hornwort dropping all its needles?

Almost always a stress response to a change - new tank, shifted parameters, altered flow, or a temperature swing. It's not dying. Stop trimming, hold your parameters steady, and watch for new growth within a week. Remove the dropped needles daily to prevent ammonia spikes from decomposition.

Does hornwort need to be planted or can it just float?

Either works. Floating actually produces faster growth because the plant stays close to the light. Anchoring it in the background is purely aesthetic. If you do anchor it, use a plant weight or very coarse substrate - don't bury the stem more than 1-2 cm or it will rot at the base.
