- Ammonia: 0 ppm, always. Any reading above 0.25 ppm is a problem requiring immediate action.
- Nitrite: 0 ppm. Nitrite binds to hemoglobin and is acutely toxic even at low levels.

A cycled, stocked aquarium is not a self-sustaining ecosystem. It is a closed box with no natural dilution, no rainfall, no seasonal flows. Nitrate accumulates. Hardness shifts. Filters clog. Most tanks need a 20-30% water change weekly or fortnightly depending on stocking density, and the filter media needs rinsing (in tank water, not tap water - chlorine kills your bacteria) every four to six weeks.
