What is mulm in an aquarium? Good, bad, and how to manage it

That fine brown fluff collecting in your substrate, behind the filter and in the corners has a name: mulm. New keepers panic and scrub it out. Experienced keepers mostly leave it alone. Here is what mulm actually is, why it is usually a sign of a healthy tank, and the few times it is worth clearing.

The short version

What mulm actually is

Mulm is the end stage of everything organic that has ever entered your tank. Fish waste, uneaten food, decaying leaves and bits of dead plant break down, get worked over by bacteria, and settle as a soft, fine, light-brown sediment. If you wave your hand near the substrate and a brown cloud lifts and slowly resettles, that cloud is mulm.

The word gets used interchangeably with detritus. Strictly, detritus is the broad term for dead organic particles; mulm is the fine, bacteria-rich version that accumulates in the substrate and filter once the tank has matured. "Sludge" usually means the heavier, smellier kind you find in a neglected tank or a filter that has not been cleaned in a year.

Why mulm is mostly a good thing

In a balanced tank, mulm is not dirt to be removed - it is part of the ecosystem doing its job:

  • It is alive with beneficial bacteria. The same nitrifying and heterotrophic bacteria that run your nitrogen cycle live throughout mulm, not just in the filter. A mature layer is biological filtration.
  • It feeds plants. As mulm breaks down it slowly releases nitrogen, phosphate and trace nutrients into the substrate, exactly where rooted plants want them. Heavily planted keepers actively value it.
  • It feeds the clean-up crew. Shrimp, snails, and especially fry graze on the microfauna and biofilm that mulm supports. A spotless tank is a hungry one for them.
  • It buffers the tank. A mature tank with established mulm and biofilm is more stable and forgiving than a sterile one - there is simply more biological capacity soaking up small mistakes.

This is why "your tank looks too clean" is a real, if cheeky, criticism. Scrubbing every surface and deep-vacuuming all the substrate every week strips out biology you actually want.

When mulm becomes a problem

Mulm only turns from helpful to harmful when there is too much of it in the wrong places:

  • Dead spots. Where flow is poor - behind rocks, under wood, in back corners - mulm piles up and traps decaying waste instead of letting bacteria process it. These pockets can go anaerobic and produce the rotten-egg smell of hydrogen sulphide.
  • A clogged filter. Mulm collecting in filter media reduces flow and biological efficiency. A filter that has slowed to a trickle needs a clean.
  • Climbing nitrate. In a tank that is overstocked, overfed or under-maintained, a heavy mulm load adds to the nitrate the cycle produces. If your nitrate readings keep creeping up, excess detritus is part of the picture.
  • Pure aesthetics. In a bare or lightly planted display tank, drifts of brown sediment just look untidy. That is a legitimate reason to tidy - just do it gently.

How to manage mulm (without sterilising your tank)

The goal is balance, not removal. A few habits keep mulm at the helpful level:

  • Gravel-vac the open areas, lightly. During water changes, siphon mulm from open substrate and dead corners. In a planted tank, just hover the siphon above the surface to lift loose mulm without digging up roots; in a bare or gravel community tank you can go deeper.
  • Fix the flow. Most mulm problems are really flow problems. Angle your filter outlet or add a small powerhead so there are no still corners for sediment to settle and rot.
  • Clean the filter in old tank water. When flow drops, rinse mechanical media (sponges, floss) in a bucket of tank water you just siphoned out - never tap water, which kills the bacteria. Swap floss, leave the biomedia.
  • Run a clean-up crew. Corydoras, shrimp, nerite and Malaysian trumpet snails turn over the substrate and eat detritus. Trumpet snails in particular burrow through sand and stop it compacting.
  • Stop overfeeding. Most mulm is just uneaten food and the waste from too much of it. Feed what the fish finish in a couple of minutes. This single habit does more than any amount of vacuuming.
The honest take

Do not chase a spotless tank. Some mulm is a sign your tank is alive and working, not a sign you are failing at maintenance. Reach for the siphon when mulm is visibly drifting in piles, when your nitrate is creeping up, or when a dead spot starts to smell - not because the substrate is not gravel-magazine clean. A mature tank with a healthy layer of mulm and biofilm is more stable than a freshly scrubbed one, and your plants, shrimp and bacteria are all quietly grateful for it.

Is mulm bad for my aquarium?

In moderation, no - mulm is mostly a good sign. It is decomposed organic matter full of beneficial bacteria and microfauna, and it slowly releases nutrients plants use. Shrimp, snails and fry graze on it. It only becomes a problem when it piles up in dead spots, clogs the filter, or pushes nitrate up in an under-maintained tank.

Should I remove mulm from my tank?

Remove the excess, not all of it. Gently siphon mulm from open substrate and dead corners during water changes, and rinse filter media in old tank water. In a planted or shrimp tank, leave most of it - it feeds the system. Let nitrate readings and the look of the tank guide you, not a need for spotless gravel.

What is the difference between mulm and detritus?

They are essentially the same and used interchangeably. Detritus is the general term for dead organic particles; mulm is the hobby word for the fine, bacteria-rich version that settles into the substrate and filter as a tank matures. "Sludge" implies a heavier, smellier, neglected build-up.

Does mulm raise nitrate?

Slowly. As mulm decomposes it releases ammonia that becomes nitrate. In a balanced tank with plants and regular water changes this is minor and the nutrients get used. A large neglected build-up in an under-maintained tank can push nitrate up over time, which is the main reason to clear excess from dead spots.

Why is there brown fluffy stuff in my new tank?

Brown fluff coating surfaces in a young tank is usually diatoms (brown algae), which clears as the tank matures. True mulm builds up over months as waste and food decompose and settle. A brown dust on glass and plants is likely diatoms; loose fluffy sediment in the substrate and filter is mulm.
