Neon tetras and betta
Quick answer
  • Neon tetras and bettas can work in 15–20+ gallons with a school of six or more tetras.
  • Use plants and decor for cover; watch for aggression. Some bettas won’t tolerate tank mates.
  • Respect group size and water quality; have a backup plan if the betta won’t settle.

Short answer

Neon tetras and bettas can live together if the tank is big enough, the tetras are in a proper school, and the betta isn’t overly aggressive. It’s not a guarantee — some bettas chase anything that moves — but many keepers run this combo successfully in a 15–20+ gallon tank.

Tank size and layout

You need room for one betta plus at least six neon tetras (they’re schooling fish). A 10 gallon is tight; 15–20 gallons gives space and reduces stress. Add plants and decor so tetras can dart away and the betta has territory. Dense planting or floating plants help break sight lines.

Group size and order

Keep at least six neons so they feel secure and act as a group. Some people add the tetras first and the betta later so the tetras establish themselves; others add the betta first. Either way, watch for chasing or nipping. If the betta is relentless, you may need to rehome one species or give the betta a tank alone. Plan your stock in App-aquatic so you don’t overstock.

What to avoid

Don’t put a single neon with a betta in a tiny tank. Don’t mix fin-nippers (e.g. some barbs) with a betta. Keep water clean and stable — both species need good quality. See our betta care and combining fish guides for more.
