Nitrite in Fish Tank: Why It Spikes and How to Bring It Down

What nitrite actually is and why it matters
Nitrite (NO₂⁻) is the middle step in the nitrogen cycle. Nitrosomonas bacteria convert ammonia into nitrite; then a separate group - primarily Nitrospira - converts nitrite into the comparatively harmless nitrate. When that second group lags behind or gets wiped out, nitrite accumulates.
It's toxic because it competes with oxygen at the haemoglobin level. Fish absorb nitrite through their gills, and it converts haemoglobin into methaemoglobin, which can't carry oxygen. The practical result: your fish suffocate even in a fully aerated tank. Fast-moving, oxygen-hungry species like danios and rainbowfish show symptoms first - gasping at the surface, rapid gill movement, lethargy. Slow, labyrinthine fish like bettas are somewhat more tolerant but still at serious risk above 1-2 ppm.
Any detectable nitrite in a mature aquarium is a signal something has gone wrong - either the cycle never finished or the biofilter has been disrupted.
When does nitrite spike?
During the initial cycle
This is the most predictable nitrite spike you'll ever see. Nitrosomonas colonise faster than Nitrospira, so there's always a window - typically weeks two through four of a fish-in or fishless cycle - where ammonia has been largely processed but nitrite is still building up faster than it's being converted. You'll watch ammonia fall on your test kit while nitrite climbs. That's the cycle working, just not finished yet.
After biofilter disturbances
A cycled tank can spike nitrite weeks or months after setup if something knocks back the bacterial population. Common triggers:
- Medication: Most broad-spectrum antibiotics and many antiparasitic treatments kill or suppress nitrifying bacteria. Always do extra testing in the two weeks after any medication course.
- Filter maintenance done wrong: Rinsing filter media under tap water chlorinates and kills the bacterial colony. Always rinse in a bucket of tank water.
- Deep substrate disruption: Pulling up planted-tank substrate or doing an aggressive gravel vacuum in a tank with a heavy substrate-based biofilter can release anaerobic pockets and disturb colonised areas.
- Sudden overstocking: Adding a lot of fish at once increases the ammonia load faster than your existing bacteria can multiply to compensate.
- Extended power outage: Nitrifying bacteria need oxygenated water flowing through the filter. A few hours without flow, especially in warm water, can cause significant die-off.
If you've just treated a sick tank with antibiotics and nitrite jumps a week later, the medication is the likely cause - not a new disease. Test daily for two weeks post-treatment.
How to bring nitrite down
Water changes: your primary tool
A 30-50% water change dilutes nitrite immediately. The water has to be temperature-matched (within 1-2°C / 2-3°F) and dechlorinated. Do this the same day you get a reading above 0.25 ppm - don't wait. If your reading is above 1 ppm, do back-to-back 30% changes rather than one massive change, which can shock the fish with parameter swings.
After the change, test again after a few hours. If nitrite climbs back to the same level within 24 hours, you haven't solved the underlying cause - you've only bought time. Cut feeding immediately
Every gram of food that goes uneaten - or gets eaten and excreted - produces ammonia, which then feeds the nitrite problem. The moment you see nitrite above zero, drop to one small feeding every 24-48 hours until the reading is back to zero. Healthy adult fish can go a week without food without any harm. Fry and juvenile fish are less tolerant and need more careful management, but even cutting to a fraction of normal feeding helps significantly.
Most people keep feeding normally during a nitrite spike because "the fish look hungry." That makes the spike worse. Less food means less ammonia means less substrate for nitrite production - it's the fastest lever you have besides water changes.
Don't clean your filter during a spike
The instinct when something's wrong is to clean everything. Resist it. Your filter media is exactly where the Nitrospira you need to process nitrite live. Cleaning it while bacteria are already under stress prolongs the spike. If flow is genuinely reduced due to clogging, a light rinse in tank water only - never tap water, never soap, never hot water.
Increase oxygenation
Nitrifying bacteria are obligate aerobes - they need dissolved oxygen to function. A struggling biofilter in a low-oxygen environment takes longer to recover. Adding an airstone or increasing surface agitation during a spike helps bacteria recover faster and also helps fish cope with the physiological stress nitrite causes.
The salt question
You'll see aquarium salt (sodium chloride) recommended for nitrite toxicity fairly often. There's real science behind it: chloride ions compete with nitrite for uptake at the gill membrane, which reduces how much nitrite gets absorbed into the bloodstream. A chloride-to-nitrite ratio of roughly 6:1 by weight is often cited as protective.
The problem is that "aquarium salt" advice gets applied carelessly. A few honest points:
- Salt reduces nitrite toxicity, it does not reduce nitrite levels. Your test readings stay the same.
- Many popular freshwater fish - cories, most tetras, loaches, scaleless species - are poorly tolerant of elevated salinity. Dosing salt to protect one fish might harm another in the same tank.
- The effective dose (typically 1-3 g/L depending on nitrite level) is high enough to be harmful to salt-sensitive species at the top end.
- Salt doesn't evaporate. Every water change you do to bring nitrite down also removes the salt you added, complicating concentration management.
Salt for nitrite is a legitimate emergency measure for a goldfish or cichlid tank where you have a single species or a compatible community with no sensitive fish. For a mixed community tank with cories, loaches, or any scaleless species, aggressive water changes are safer and more effective. The salt debate is genuinely context-dependent - don't let anyone tell you it's always right or always wrong.
What your test readings are telling you
Not all nitrite readings are equal. A reading of 0.5 ppm that disappears after one water change in a new tank means the cycle is nearly complete. A reading of 0.5 ppm in a six-month-old tank that keeps bouncing back means your biofilter is chronically undersized or overloaded. Those are very different problems requiring very different responses.
When interpreting nitrite alongside your other aquarium water parameters, pay attention to the pattern:
- Nitrite high, ammonia falling: Classic mid-cycle. Keep going, do water changes as needed to protect fish, don't add more fish.
- Both ammonia and nitrite elevated: Severe bacterial crash or the cycle hasn't started properly. Act fast.
- Nitrite up, ammonia zero, nitrate rising: The cycle is completing but the nitrite-oxidising bacteria just haven't fully caught up. You're close - hold steady.

Speeding up bacterial recovery
If you've had a filter crash or medication event, you can accelerate bacterial recolonisation a few ways. Adding a piece of mature filter media from a healthy tank is the most reliable method - even a small amount of colonised sponge or ceramic media transfers a working bacterial community. Bacterial starter products (sold as bottled bacteria) vary enormously in quality; some work reasonably well, most are marginal, and none are a substitute for actual mature media if you can get it.
Keep temperature at the upper end of your fish's tolerance range during recovery - nitrifying bacteria grow faster in warmer water. For a typical tropical community tank, 26-27°C (79-81°F) is reasonable. Don't go higher trying to speed things up; at 30°C+ bacterial growth rates actually start declining and fish stress increases.
Preventing future spikes
Most recurring nitrite problems come down to a few fixable habits:
- Never rinse filter media in tap water. A bucket of tank water, every time.
- Add fish gradually - good beginner fish still need to be added in stages to let your biofilter catch up.
- Have a hospital/quarantine tank ready before treating disease, so you're not medicating your display tank and crashing its filter.
- Keep a spare bottle of dechlorinator and a backup airstone. A power outage plus no flow for 4-6 hours in summer is enough to cause a partial crash.
- Test regularly, not just when something looks wrong. A small nitrite reading is easy to deal with; catching it at 0.1 ppm rather than 2 ppm means one water change instead of a crisis.

In a typical fishless cycle, nitrite peaks somewhere between weeks two and four and clears within one to two weeks after that peak, assuming ammonia dosing is correct. A fish-in cycle is less predictable - it can take six to eight weeks total before both ammonia and nitrite consistently read zero. If you're seeing nitrite for longer than that with no clear downward trend, something is slowing bacterial colonisation: temperature too low, chlorine exposure, or insufficient ammonia source.
Can fish recover from nitrite poisoning?
Yes, if you act quickly enough. Fish showing early symptoms - rapid breathing, surface gasping, reddened gill edges - can recover fully once nitrite is reduced and oxygen levels are adequate. Fish that have been exposed to high nitrite (above 2-3 ppm) for several days may have gill damage that takes weeks to heal. A few fish, particularly small tetras and young fish, may not recover from extended exposure. Getting nitrite down fast is what makes the difference.
Is 0.25 ppm nitrite dangerous?
It depends on context. In a tank mid-cycle with fish, 0.25 ppm warrants a water change and close monitoring - it's on its way up, not down. In a tank that was at 0.5 ppm yesterday, 0.25 ppm means things are improving. The absolute number matters less than the direction and rate of change, and whether your fish are showing symptoms. That said, 0 ppm is always the goal; don't normalise any non-zero reading in a mature tank.
Do water conditioners neutralise nitrite the way they neutralise ammonia?
Some do, partially and temporarily. Products like Seachem Prime claim to detoxify nitrite for 24-48 hours at standard doses by binding it in a less harmful form. This can buy you time in an emergency but it doesn't remove nitrite or fix the underlying problem - the next test may still show it present because it's still chemically there. Use these products as a short-term bridge, not a solution. Water changes are still the primary fix.
My tank has been running for months and now suddenly has nitrite - what happened?
The most common causes in a previously stable tank are: medication used in the last two weeks, filter media rinsed in tap water, a clogged filter that went unnoticed (causing low-oxygen conditions that killed bacteria), a significant addition of new fish, or a dead fish decomposing unnoticed. Work backwards through those in order.
