Guide
Quarantine new fish
Protect your main tank — isolate, observe, and treat before adding newcomers.
- Why: Prevents disease and parasites from entering your established tank.
- Duration: Often 2–4 weeks of observation; longer if treating.
- Basics: Cycled filter or mature media, heater, hiding places, and daily observation.
Quarantine tank setup
A bare-bottom tank with a sponge filter or cycled hang-on filter works well. Sponge filters are easy to disinfect if needed. Use a heater matched to species needs.
What to watch
White spots, flashing, clamped fins, rapid breathing, or refusal to eat. Treat only when you have a diagnosis; avoid random medication cocktails.
Before adding to main tank
Fish should be eating well and show no signs of illness for the full quarantine period. Acclimate carefully when moving — see drip acclimation.

You can, but you risk introducing ich and other pathogens to your main tank — many hobbyists regret skipping it.
Do I need a separate heater and filter?
Yes — a dedicated small filter (or cycled media from main tank) and a heater are standard.
