How to temperature match your new tank water
Avoid shock during water changes: match new water to your tank temperature.
Why it matters
Adding cold or hot water during a water change can shock fish. Sudden temperature swings stress them, weaken immunity, and in extreme cases can kill. Matching the new water to the tank temperature keeps the change stable and safe.
Use a thermometer
Check the tank temperature with a reliable thermometer. Then prepare your new water in a bucket or container. Add dechlorinator first. Heat or cool the new water until it is within 1–2 °F (about 0.5–1 °C) of the tank. A spare heater in the bucket works; so does mixing hot and cold tap, or letting cold water sit and warm to room temperature before adding a little hot.
Mixing methods
Hot and cold tap: Adjust the tap until the mix feels similar to the tank when you hold your hand under it. Use a thermometer to confirm. Heater in bucket: Place a small heater in the bucket and wait until the reading matches the tank. Float method: For small amounts, you can float a sealed jug of new water in the tank until it reaches tank temperature — but this is slow and only practical for tiny changes.
Python-style or hose systems
If you use a Python or similar system that refills directly from the tap, you must match temperature at the tap. Run the water, adjust hot and cold, and check with a thermometer before directing it into the tank. Start with a trickle so you can correct if needed.
How close is close enough?
Within 1–2 °F of the tank is ideal. A difference of 3–4 °F can cause stress; larger swings are dangerous. Tropical tanks are usually 75–82 °F — cold tap in winter can be 50 °F or lower, so matching is essential.
For new fish
When adding new fish, acclimation includes temperature matching. Float the bag to equalise temperature before releasing fish. For sensitive species, use drip acclimation so both temperature and chemistry adjust gradually.
Quick takeaways
- Match new water to within 1–2 °F of the tank.
- Use a thermometer; add dechlorinator before heating.
- Hot/cold mix or heater in bucket; for Python systems, match at the tap.
