Vallisneria: Complete Aquatic Plant Care

- Species: Vallisneria spiralis and related species - long-leafed background plants that grow fast, propagate via runners, and tolerate a wide range of conditions.
- Water chemistry: pH 6.5-8.5, temperature 20-28°C (68-82°F). One of the few plants that genuinely thrives in hard, alkaline water.
- Light: Medium - around 30-50 PAR at the substrate. No CO₂ injection needed.
- Growth rate: Fast. Expect runners within weeks of planting; a single plant can colonise your entire background in a few months.
- Placement: Background or sides. Leaves reach 30-100 cm depending on species - plan for height.
- Biggest mistake: Burying the crown. The meristematic growing tip must sit at or just above the substrate surface or the plant rots and dies.
Why Vallisneria deserves a spot in your tank
Vallisneria is one of the oldest cultivated aquarium plants and, in many ways, still the most practical. It doesn't need CO₂ injection, it handles the hard alkaline water that kills most stem plants, it grows fast enough to outcompete algae for nutrients, and it gives fish - particularly livebearers and cichlids - the kind of dense background cover they actually use. For beginners setting up their first community tank, it's one of the best starting plants you can buy.
There are several species worth knowing. Vallisneria spiralis is the most common, with straight or gently twisted leaves reaching 30-60 cm. Vallisneria americana (also sold as V. gigantea) grows considerably larger - up to 100 cm - making it better suited to tanks over 60 cm tall. Vallisneria nana stays compact at 20-40 cm and works well in mid-sized setups. If you're buying from a store, the label often just says "Vallisneria" without specifying the species, so check the leaf width: narrow leaves under 1 cm are usually spiralis or nana; broader flat leaves suggest americana.
Water parameters and chemistry
This is where Vallisneria genuinely stands out. Most aquatic plants prefer soft, slightly acidic water - the South American blackwater conditions that also suit tetras and discus. Vallisneria comes from lakes, rivers, and estuaries across Europe, Asia, and North America, and it evolved in hard, mineral-rich water. That makes it one of the very few plants that actually performs better at higher pH and general hardness.
Vallisneria handles the full span from slightly acidic to strongly alkaline - a wider range than almost any other popular aquarium plant.
In practice, aim for:
- Temperature: 20-28°C (68-82°F). It'll survive brief excursions outside this range but growth slows noticeably below 18°C.
- pH: 6.5-8.5. Performs best toward the middle-to-upper end of this range (pH 7.2-8.0).
- General hardness (GH): 4-20 dGH. Soft water tanks below 4 dGH can cause deficiencies and poor growth.
- Carbonate hardness (KH): 3-15 dKH. Stable KH is especially important - it buffers pH swings that stress the plant.
- Nitrate: 10-30 mg/L is ideal. Vallisneria is a heavy nitrogen feeder; if your tank is heavily planted and lightly stocked, you may need to dose liquid fertiliser to prevent yellowing.
If you're running a heavily planted low-tech tank with soft, acidic water specifically for South American fish, Vallisneria isn't the right plant for that setup. It'll struggle while your stem plants thrive. In a hard-water community tank with livebearers, goldfish, or African cichlids, however, it's almost unbeatable.
Planting correctly
More Vallisneria dies in the first two weeks from improper planting than from any parameter issue. The crown - the point where the leaves emerge from the root mass - must sit at or fractionally above the substrate surface. Plant it too deep and the crown suffocates and rots. Plant the roots in, and the crown exposed to light and water flow, and you'll be fine.
Use fine-to-medium grain substrate 5-8 cm deep. Vallisneria is a root feeder, so substrate depth matters more than for floating or column-feeding plants. Plain gravel works, but an inert substrate capped with root tabs outperforms bare gravel in the long run. Avoid coarse gravel - the roots struggle to penetrate it and the plant stays stunted.
Planting Vallisneria the same way you plant stem plants - pushing a generous section of stem into the substrate. The crown gets buried, water circulation cuts off, and the plant melts within a week. Only the roots go into the substrate. The crown stays visible.
New plants almost always melt back after purchase. You'll see leaves yellowing, going transparent, and dissolving within the first 7-14 days. This is normal. The plant is transitioning from emersed or tissue-culture growth to fully submerged conditions. Leave the roots and crown in place; new leaves will emerge once it acclimatises. Only remove leaves that have fully rotted - don't pull the plant out and conclude it's dead.
Lighting
Vallisneria is often described as a "low light" plant, which is slightly misleading. It tolerates low light - you won't kill it - but it grows slowly and produces pale, thin leaves under insufficient illumination. Medium light, around 30-50 PAR at the substrate, is the sweet spot. At this level it grows vigorously, produces thick green leaves, and sends out runners regularly.
A standard 6500K LED running 8-10 hours per day is sufficient for most tanks under 45 cm deep. For deeper tanks, or if your leaves are narrow, pale, and reaching almost horizontally for the surface, increase light intensity rather than duration - long photoperiods with weak light encourage algae more than they help the plant.
If your Vallisneria leaves are lying flat and reaching toward the light rather than growing upright, your light is too weak. Increase intensity before extending hours.
Fertilisation and CO₂
CO₂ injection is not needed and won't dramatically speed up growth the way it does with demanding stem plants. Vallisneria is efficient at using dissolved CO₂ from biological activity in the tank. Running pressurised CO₂ with it is harmless but mostly wasted on this plant.
Fertilisation is a different story. Because Vallisneria grows fast, it consumes nutrients quickly - particularly nitrogen, potassium, and iron. In a lightly stocked tank, nutrient depletion shows up as yellowing older leaves or pale new growth. Root tabs placed near the plant every 2-3 months provide a steady supply of macro and micronutrients directly to the root zone. Liquid fertiliser works too, especially in tanks with established fish loads providing a natural nitrogen source through the nitrogen cycle.
One thing most guides don't mention: Vallisneria can show iron deficiency as new leaves emerging pale yellow while older leaves stay green. This is distinct from a general nutrient deficiency, which tends to yellow older leaves first. If you see pale new growth specifically, dose a chelated iron supplement for two to three weeks and monitor.
Runner propagation and managing spread
Propagation is effortless - which is both the plant's greatest strength and its most common source of frustration. Vallisneria spreads exclusively via horizontal runners that travel through the substrate and produce daughter plants at intervals. A single plant in good conditions can send out runners within three to four weeks of establishing, and those daughters produce their own runners in turn. Left unmanaged, a small cluster can fill the back third of a 90 cm tank within a few months.
To propagate intentionally, simply wait until a daughter plant has developed three to five leaves and a visible root system, then sever the runner connecting it to the mother plant with scissors. The daughter is now independent. You can relocate it within the same tank or pot it up for a different setup.
To control spread, pull unwanted runners before the daughter plants root. Once a daughter has established in the substrate, removing it becomes more disruptive. Check the back of your tank every couple of weeks and sever runners heading into areas you want to keep clear.
If you want to keep Vallisneria contained to a specific zone, plant it in a section bordered by hardscape - rocks or driftwood pressed close to the substrate act as a runner barrier and slow lateral spread considerably.
Trimming and height management
This is the part most guides get wrong. You cannot trim Vallisneria the same way you trim stem plants. Cutting the leaves horizontally leaves a brown, dead tip that looks terrible and never heals - the cut end just dies back. The plant itself won't be damaged, but those brown-tipped leaves are permanent until they're shed naturally or fully removed.
If leaves are reaching the surface and folding over, you have a few options. The cleanest approach is to pull individual leaves that are excessively long out from the base, rather than cutting them mid-leaf. Alternatively, accept that the leaves will float horizontally at the surface - many fish appreciate the surface cover and it's not harmful to the plant. Some aquarists choose a shorter Vallisneria species (V. nana or compact V. spiralis) if height is a persistent problem.
Liquid carbon supplements (glutaraldehyde-based products) can damage or kill Vallisneria even at normal dosing levels. If you use these products for algae control, either skip Vallisneria or reduce the dose to a quarter of what's recommended and monitor carefully.
Compatible tankmates
Vallisneria is one of the few plants that holds up well with fish that dig or graze. Goldfish, which destroy most aquatic plants, tend to leave Vallisneria alone - its long, slightly tough leaves aren't appealing to them, and regular thinning of runners keeps the plant dense enough to withstand some attention. African cichlids that rearrange substrate will uproot plants occasionally, but Vallisneria re-roots quickly. Large herbivorous cichlids like Vieja species may graze the leaves directly - that's the limit of its resilience.

Troubleshooting common problems
Leaves turning yellow
Most often a nutrient deficiency - either nitrogen or iron. Check your water parameters and nitrate level first. If nitrate is below 10 mg/L in a lightly stocked tank, your plant is running out of nitrogen. Add root tabs or liquid fertiliser. If nitrate is fine but new growth is pale specifically, target iron with a chelated supplement.
Plant melting after purchase
Normal transitional melt, as described above. Give it two to three weeks before concluding something is wrong. Remove rotting leaves to avoid ammonia spikes, but leave the crown and roots undisturbed.
Leaves brown at the tips
Physical damage from trimming, or water flow damage if a powerhead is blasting the leaves directly. Reposition flow outlets so current moves around rather than directly into the plant.
No runners after two months
Usually insufficient light or nutrients. Check your light intensity at the substrate level (a PAR meter or app-based estimate helps). Add root tabs if you haven't already. Vallisneria in poor conditions will survive but won't invest energy in reproduction.
Algae on leaves
Slow-growing or stressed Vallisneria accumulates algae faster than healthy plants. Address the underlying problem - usually light balance or water quality - rather than just cleaning leaves. Healthy fast-growing Vallisneria is naturally outcompeting algae for nutrients; once it's growing well, algae on the leaves typically clears on its own. Regular water changes go a long way here.
Plenty of aquarists who run CO₂ and precision lighting rigs dismiss Vallisneria as too basic. That's fair in the context of high-tech planted tanks. But for a hard-water community setup that you want to look full and natural with minimal intervention, there isn't a better background plant. It does the job without demanding anything back from you.
