Guide
Zebra danio care guide
Hardy schooling fish: tank size, group size, temperature, and compatible tank mates.
- Species: Danio rerio — zebra danio; extremely hardy, active swimmers.
- Schooling: Keep at least 6, preferably 8+ in a long tank (they swim horizontally).
- Tank: 60L+ for a decent school; larger is better for swimming space.
- Water: Wide temperature tolerance (about 18–26°C); avoid pairing with slow fish that are stressed by constant motion.
Tank size and shape
Zebra danios are fast, open-water swimmers. A 60–80L tank with length (not tall cubes) works well for a school. Add tight-fitting lids — they jump.
Water parameters
They tolerate a wide range; aim for stable pH and 0 ammonia / 0 nitrite. They do not require a heater in cool rooms but thrive in typical tropical temperatures (22–24°C) with most community fish.
Tank mates
Peaceful, similarly sized fish: other danios, rasboras, small corydoras, smaller tetras. Avoid long-finned slow fish (e.g. bettas) with very active danios in small tanks.
Feeding
Quality flake or small pellets; occasional live or frozen foods. Feed small amounts once or twice daily — they are eager eaters.

At least six; eight or more is better for natural schooling behaviour.
Can zebra danios live with bettas?
Risky in small tanks — danios are fast and may nip long fins. Larger tanks with careful observation may work.
Do I need a heater?
Only if your room temperature stays below their comfort zone; many keepers use a heater for stable 22–24°C.
