Good setups for a 50 litre tank
50 litres is about 13 US gallons — a compact footprint that suits nano schooling fish, a single centrepiece, or a small community. Use our stocking calculator to test combinations.
Community setup
In 50 litres you can run a light community: one small school plus a few bottom dwellers. Six ember tetras or chili rasboras, four to six pygmy corydoras, and optionally a honey gourami as a gentle centrepiece. Keep bioload modest; this size swings quickly if you overfeed or skip water changes. Track parameters with a tool like App-aquatic so you spot issues early.
Centerpiece setup
One show fish plus a supporting cast works well. A single betta with six small rasboras (e.g. chili or harlequin) and a handful of pygmy corys. Or a dwarf gourami with six neon tetras and four corys. The centrepiece gets the attention; the school adds movement. Avoid large or nippy species — see betta tank mates if mixing with a betta.
Nano-only option
Shrimp and snails, or a tiny school of celestial pearl danios or ember tetras with no other fish. Low bioload, minimal fuss. Good for beginners or a desk tank.
What to avoid
Cichlids need more space; 50L is too small for African or South American cichlids. Goldfish, large livebearers, and anything that grows beyond a couple of inches will outgrow or overload this volume.
Quick takeaways
- 50 litres suits a small community, a centrepiece plus school, or a nano-only setup.
- Stick to small schooling fish and pygmy corys; leave bioload headroom.
- Cycle first, add gradually, and keep up maintenance.
