Quick answer
  • Java fern, anubias, hornwort, java moss, and Amazon sword are beginner-friendly.
  • Don’t bury rhizomes on java fern and anubias. Attach to decor.
  • Easy plants still need some light and clean water — track your tank so you spot issues. App-aquatic helps.

Why start with easy plants?

Beginner-friendly plants tolerate normal lighting, don’t need injected CO2, and grow without heavy fertiliser. They help absorb nitrate and give fish cover. Get the basics right first — then level up if you want.

Java fern

Attach to wood or rock (don’t bury the rhizome or it rots). Grows in low light, slow and steady. Very forgiving. One of the best first plants.

Anubias

Same idea: attach to hardscape, don’t bury the rhizome. Low light, slow growth, tough. Small anubias (e.g. nana) fit nano tanks.

Hornwort

Floating or planted. Grows fast, soaks up nitrate. Can shed needles if stressed; trim and remove dead bits. Good for filling space and improving water quality.

Java moss

Attach to mesh, wood, or rock. Grows in almost any light. Great for shrimp and fry. Easy to trim and reshape.

Amazon sword

Root-feeder: plant in substrate. Gets big over time; suits medium to large tanks. Moderate light is enough. Add root tabs if growth stalls.
