Freshwater vs saltwater aquarium
Both are rewarding, but they are different in cost, complexity, and day-to-day routine.
- Freshwater is cheaper to start: A solid freshwater setup runs £150-£400 / $200-$500. A comparable saltwater reef can easily cost £800-£2,000+ / $1,000-$2,500+ before you add livestock.
- Saltwater parameters are less forgiving: Salinity must stay at 1.025-1.026 specific gravity, and temperature swings of more than 1-2°C (2-4°F) can crash a reef. Freshwater gives you more margin for error.
- Freshwater has far more beginner-friendly fish: Species like Danio rerio (zebra danio) and Poecilia reticulata (guppy) tolerate imperfect parameters. Most saltwater fish do not.
- Both need a cycled tank: The nitrogen cycle is non-negotiable either way. Skipping it kills fish in freshwater and saltwater alike.
- Saltwater is genuinely more rewarding once you're ready: Coral reefs and marine fish are some of the most visually striking setups possible - they just require consistent habits first.
- Start freshwater, upgrade later: Most experienced marine keepers started in freshwater. The skills transfer directly.
The real cost difference
Budget comparisons in this hobby are often vague. Here are realistic numbers for a mid-size tank (200-250 litres / 50-65 gallons).
Freshwater setup costs
A decent freshwater aquarium with a canister filter, heater, lighting, and substrate will set you back around £200-£400 / $250-$500 at setup. Ongoing costs are modest - water conditioner, food, and occasional fertiliser if you keep live plants. Weekly water changes (typically 20-30%) are the main time commitment. Fish themselves are inexpensive: community species like Paracheirodon innesi (neon tetra) cost £2-£4 / $2-$5 each.
Saltwater setup costs
The equipment list for saltwater is longer and more expensive at every line item. You'll need a protein skimmer, a return pump, live rock, a refractometer (not a cheap swing-arm hydrometer), RO/DI water or an RO/DI unit, and - for a reef - full-spectrum lighting that can run £200-£600 / $250-$800 on its own. Then add salt mix: a 20kg bucket costs £35-£60 / $45-$75 and lasts a few months at typical change volumes. Marine fish are expensive. A single Amphiprion ocellaris (common clownfish) runs £15-£30 / $20-$40. A flame angelfish (Centropyge loricula) is £60-£100 / $80-$130. Coral frags start cheap but reef-quality pieces escalate fast.
A saltwater reef setup costs roughly three to five times more than an equivalent freshwater tank once you account for equipment, salt, and livestock.
The "saltwater is too expensive" argument gets overstated. A simple fish-only saltwater tank (FOWLR - fish only with live rock) is achievable for £500-£700 / $600-$900. Water parameters: where the real difference lives
This is where freshwater and saltwater genuinely diverge in day-to-day management, and where most beginners underestimate saltwater.
Freshwater parameters
Most freshwater community fish tolerate a reasonably wide range. Temperature 22-26°C (72-79°F), pH 6.5-7.8, hardness 5-20 dGH - different species have preferences within that range, but the margin for small errors is real. A heater malfunction that drops the tank to 20°C (68°F) overnight will stress fish. It probably won't kill a tank of tetras. The same event in a reef can wipe out coral and trigger a crash.
Saltwater parameters
Marine tanks require stability across more variables simultaneously. Salinity 1.025-1.026 SG (35 ppt). Temperature 25-26°C (77-79°F), tight. pH 8.1-8.4. Alkalinity (dKH) 8-12. Calcium 380-450 ppm. Magnesium 1,250-1,350 ppm (critical if you keep stony coral). Nitrate should stay under 20 ppm for fish-only, under 5 ppm for a reef. Phosphate under 0.1 ppm for coral health. That's six or seven parameters you're tracking regularly, compared to two or three in freshwater. Evaporation raises salinity daily - a reef tank in a warm room can lose enough water in 24 hours to shift SG by 0.001-0.002 without an auto top-off system.
Tap water is fine for most freshwater tanks after dechlorination. Never use tap water directly in a saltwater tank. Chloramine, phosphates, silicates, and heavy metals in tap water cause algae blooms and harm coral. Use RO/DI water - either buy it from a local fish store (around £0.50-£1 / $0.50-$1.25 per litre) or install an RO/DI unit at home.
Equipment requirements compared
Freshwater
The core equipment list is short: tank, canister or hang-on-back filter, heater, thermometer, basic lighting (more if you keep live plants), and a water conditioner like sodium thiosulfate. A good test kit - API Master Test Kit or equivalent - covers ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and pH. That's enough to keep almost any freshwater community tank healthy.
Saltwater
Beyond the basics, a saltwater tank typically needs a protein skimmer (removes dissolved organics before they break down), a sump or at minimum a quality return pump setup, a refractometer for accurate salinity readings, and live rock to seed biological filtration. Reef tanks add high-output lighting, a calcium reactor or two-part dosing system, and often a dedicated auto top-off (ATO) unit. The more equipment you run, the more there is to malfunction - and saltwater livestock is expensive to replace when something goes wrong at 2am.

Freshwater fish variety
The freshwater hobby has thousands of species available in the trade, ranging from nano fish like Boraras brigittae (chili rasbora) at 2cm to large cichlids and catfish that need 400+ litres. Saltwater fish variety
Marine fish are visually spectacular but most are wild-caught, sensitive to water quality, and significantly harder to acclimatise. A few species - clownfish, dottybacks, some gobies - are aquacultured and more robust. Many popular species have specific requirements that catch beginners out: mandarins (Synchiropus splendidus) need established pods populations to survive in most home tanks; tangs need swimming room (a 180-litre / 48-gallon minimum for a yellow tang Zebrasoma flavescens is the realistic floor, not a guideline). Reef-safe compatibility is another variable entirely - some angelfish and butterflyfish will pick coral apart.

Maintenance: week to week
Both tank types need regular water changes, but the work involved differs.
A freshwater community tank on a stable routine typically needs a 20-30% water change weekly or bi-weekly, filter media rinsed in old tank water every 4-6 weeks, and glass cleaned as needed. A saltwater tank adds salinity testing before every water change, mixing and aerating new saltwater 24 hours in advance, skimmer cup cleaning (weekly or more), checking and topping off evaporation loss (daily if no ATO), and - in a reef - testing calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium regularly. Many reef keepers test alk every 2-3 days when dosing two-part. Budget 45-90 minutes of active work per week minimum, plus the mental load of monitoring more variables.
Experienced saltwater keepers often say their tanks aren't dramatically more work than freshwater once the system is mature and stable. That's true - but getting to that stable point takes longer, costs more if things go wrong, and requires better-established habits. The first six months of a reef tank are the hardest. If your freshwater maintenance isn't consistent yet, saltwater will amplify every gap in your routine.
The nitrogen cycle - non-negotiable for both
One thing that doesn't change between freshwater and saltwater: you must cycle your tank before adding livestock. Ammonia from fish waste converts to nitrite (toxic), then nitrate (less toxic) via beneficial bacteria. New tanks have no bacteria. Adding fish to an uncycled tank causes ammonia spikes that burn gill tissue and kill fish within days.
Freshwater cycles typically take 4-6 weeks using fish food or pure ammonia to feed the bacteria. Saltwater cycles often go faster with live rock, which carries bacteria from the ocean, but still need 2-4 weeks minimum. Which should you choose?
If you've never kept fish before: start with freshwater. Not because saltwater is impossible for beginners, but because freshwater lets you build the habits that make saltwater successful - consistent testing, regular water changes, reading your fish's behaviour - without the financial penalty of getting it wrong. A crashed freshwater tank costs you some fish and stings. A crashed reef can cost hundreds in livestock overnight.

Do freshwater fish need salt?
No. Some fishkeepers add a small amount of aquarium salt to freshwater tanks as a general tonic or to treat certain diseases, but it's not required and can harm sensitive species like corydoras and many live-bearing plants. Don't add salt to a freshwater tank by default.
How long does it take to set up a saltwater tank before adding fish?
With live rock and a bottled bacteria product, some tanks show a complete cycle in 2-3 weeks.
