Siamese fighting fish vs betta: what is the difference?

Short answer: nothing. They are two names for the same fish in most aquarium contexts.

Betta fish (Siamese fighting fish)

Betta and Siamese fighting fish are the same fish

In aquarium keeping, "betta" and "Siamese fighting fish" both refer to Betta splendens. Betta is the shorter hobby term; Siamese fighting fish is the longer common name.

Why there are two names

The full name became popular because of their origin and territorial behaviour. Over time, hobbyists mostly use "betta" because it is quicker, but search traffic uses both terms.

Does care change by name?

No. Whether someone says betta or Siamese fighting fish, care is the same: warm stable water, gentle filtration, enough space, and compatible tank mates.

Quick care basics

  • Minimum 5 gallons, ideally 10 for stability
  • Temperature around 76-82 F (24-28 C)
  • One male per tank
  • Track ammonia, nitrite, nitrate regularly
