Snail health: what are the key things to look out for with snails?
Shell, activity, food, and water — the main things that keep snails healthy (and when to worry).
Shell condition
A healthy snail has a solid, smooth shell with no big cracks, holes, or obvious erosion. Pitting, white patches, or thinning often point to soft/acidic water or lack of calcium. See our nerite shell issues guide for causes and fixes. If the shell is cracked and the body is exposed, the snail is at risk; keep water very clean and avoid further injury.
Activity and behaviour
Snails rest sometimes — upside down, on the glass, or on the substrate — and that's normal. What to watch for: a snail that never moves for days, stays retracted and doesn't respond to touch, or is lying on its back and never righting itself. Floating can be normal for some species (e.g. mystery snails); if they then crawl and graze, they're usually fine. If several snails suddenly die or stop moving, think water quality or poisoning (e.g. copper, medication that harms inverts).
Feeding
Many snails live on algae, biofilm, and leftover fish food. In very clean tanks they may need extra food: blanched veg (cucumber, zucchini, kale), algae wafers, or snail-specific foods. Don't overfeed the tank for the snails' sake — it spikes ammonia and nitrate. A little targeted food is better than a tank full of leftovers.
Water quality and safety
Snails need stable, clean water. Ammonia and nitrite should be zero; avoid copper (in meds or tap in some areas) and invert-unsafe treatments. Hardness (GH/KH) matters for shell — very soft water can lead to shell problems. Keep maintenance consistent and test regularly. Log your results in App-aquatic so you can spot trends.
Quick takeaways
- Healthy shell = solid, no big cracks or erosion; fix soft water and diet if the shell looks bad.
- Watch for snails that never move, stay retracted, or don't right themselves; check water and meds if several die.
- Feed a little extra in clean tanks; avoid copper and invert-unsafe meds; keep water stable.
