Great setups for a 20 gallon community tank
Example combinations that work: schooling fish, centrepiece, and bottom dwellers.
- Realistic capacity: A 20 gallon long fits one or two schools of small fish (6-8 each), one centrepiece fish, and a bottom-dwelling cleanup crew - that's your ceiling.

Why 20 gallons is a genuinely good size
Twenty gallons sits in a sweet spot that beginner guides don't always explain well. It's small enough to be affordable - tank, heater, filter, light - but large enough that water chemistry doesn't swing dangerously between water changes. A 5 gallon tank can go from safe to toxic within a day if something dies or you skip a water change. A 20 gallon gives you more buffer.
The footprint matters more than the volume number. A 20 gallon long (typically 30" × 12" × 12") gives shoaling fish a proper run of open water, which a 20 gallon high (24" × 12" × 16") doesn't. If you have the choice, go long.
Filtration-wise, aim for a filter rated at 4-6× your tank volume per hour. For a 20 gallon that means at least 80 GPH, ideally 100-120 GPH. A hang-on-back with adjustable flow covers this easily. If you're running a HOB filter, position the outlet to create surface agitation across the full width of the tank. This improves gas exchange and keeps dissolved oxygen high enough for active mid-water swimmers like danios and rasboras.
Four setups that actually work
These aren't theoretical combinations - they're stocking plans built around fish that genuinely share water parameters, temperament, and tank level. Each one leaves you with a stable, interesting display without pushing bioload to the edge.
Setup 1: Classic tetra and cory
This is the community tank most experienced fishkeepers started with, and it works because every fish earns its place.
- 8 Paracheirodon axelrodi (cardinal tetras) or P. innesi (neon tetras)
- 6 Corydoras sterbai or C. paleatus
- 1 honey gourami (Trichogaster chuna)
Temperature: 24-27°C (75-81°F). pH: 6.5-7.5. The cardinals and corys both prefer soft, slightly acidic water; the honey gourami is flexible. Avoid dwarf gouramis (Colisa lalia) if you can - they're notoriously disease-prone due to decades of commercial overbreeding and carry a high risk of Dwarf Gourami Iridovirus (DGIV), which has no treatment.
Plants - even low-tech Anubias, java fern, or floating hornwort - make a real difference here. Tetras are more confident and display better colour in a planted tank.
Neon tetras are fragile compared to cardinals and die more easily in suboptimal water. If you can find cardinals at a reasonable price, they're the better long-term investment. Cardinals prefer warmer water (26-28°C / 79-82°F) and softer conditions, so make sure your tap water is compatible before buying.
Setup 2: Betta community
A betta in a community tank is doable, but the margin for error is smaller than most guides admit.
- 1 male betta (Betta splendens)
- 8 chili rasboras (Boraras brigittae) or harlequin rasboras (Trigonostigma heteromorpha)
- 6 Corydoras habrosus or pygmy corys (C. pygmaeus)
Temperature: 25-28°C (77-82°F). pH: 6.5-7.5. The key to making this work is plants and sight lines. Dense planting - or at minimum floating plants that break up the surface - lets the betta claim a territory without being able to see and patrol the whole tank constantly. Chili rasboras are an excellent choice because their small size and rapid movement make them easy for bettas to ignore.
Avoid anything with flowing fins (male guppies, fancy platies) and anything brightly coloured that resembles another betta. Avoid tiger barbs entirely - they're relentless fin nippers. And never house two male bettas together regardless of tank size.
Individual betta temperament varies enormously. Some bettas tolerate tankmates without issue; others attack anything that moves. Have a backup plan - a spare tank or divider - before committing to a betta community setup. No combination of fish guarantees success with an aggressive individual.
Setup 3: Livebearer tank
Livebearers are hardy, colourful, and genuinely beginner-friendly. The catch is that they breed - efficiently and constantly.
- 4-6 platies (Xiphophorus maculatus) or a mix of male and female guppies (Poecilia reticulata)
- 6 Corydoras aeneus (bronze corys)
- 3-4 nerite snails
Temperature: 22-26°C (72-79°F). pH: 7.0-8.0. Livebearers prefer harder, more alkaline water - the opposite of the tetras in Setup 1. If your tap water is hard (above 150 ppm TDS), this is the community for you.
For guppies, keep a ratio of 2-3 females per male to prevent females being harassed to exhaustion. With platies, you can keep a more even split. Either way, plan for fry. A densely planted tank with floating plants lets some survive naturally; without it, adults eat most of them.
Buying one male and one female guppy "to see what happens." What happens is that the female is constantly pregnant (she can store sperm for months), the male harasses her relentlessly, and your tank is overrun with fry within six weeks. Start with a group, keep the ratio right, or keep males only.
Setup 4: Active schooling tank
If you want movement and activity over the whole tank, this is the setup.
- 8 zebra danios (Danio rerio) or white cloud mountain minnows (Tanichthys albonubes)
- 8 harlequin rasboras (Trigonostigma heteromorpha)
- 6 Corydoras paleatus
Temperature: 18-24°C (64-75°F) for white clouds; 22-26°C (72-79°F) for danios. This is the one setup where you can keep the heater lower - danios and white clouds are cool-water tolerant, which can actually help with disease resistance. Don't mix white clouds with tropical fish that need 26°C+ though; the temperature ranges don't overlap comfortably.
This setup skips the centrepiece fish deliberately. Two active schools filling the mid and upper levels, corys working the substrate - it's busier and more visually dynamic than a single dominant fish with satellite schools.
Stocking rules that prevent expensive regrets
The old "one inch of fish per gallon" rule is useless. A 10-inch Oscar is not compatible with 10 neon tetras just because the arithmetic works out the same. What actually matters is bioload, adult size, swimming space, and temperament.
A more reliable approach: stock to about 75% of what an online stocking calculator says your tank can support, not 100%. This leaves a margin for natural bioload variation, the occasional overfeeding, and the fish you'll inevitably want to add in six months. Running a tank at 95% theoretical capacity means one dead fish or missed water change can tip you into an ammonia spike.
Most peaceful community species show stress and reduced immunity above this level - test weekly and adjust your water change schedule accordingly.
Add fish in stages. After your tank has cycled, add the bottom dwellers first (corys are hardy and help establish the biological filter across all tank zones). Wait two weeks, test ammonia and nitrite - both should read zero. Then add the schooling fish. Wait another two weeks before any centrepiece fish. This staged approach lets your filter bacteria population grow to match the increasing bioload.
Parameters, temperature, and what most guides miss
Every fish on your stocking list needs to overlap comfortably on three variables: temperature, pH, and hardness. Most guides mention the first two and skip hardness entirely. This is where you get into trouble mixing tetras that want soft, acidic water (pH 6.5, under 100 ppm TDS) with livebearers that prefer hard, alkaline conditions (pH 7.5+, 200+ ppm TDS). Neither group will thrive at the compromise setting - they'll just survive.
Check your tap water parameters before picking fish, not after. Your local water company usually publishes annual water quality reports online. Alternatively, test your tap water with a liquid test kit and note the pH and hardness. Then choose fish that match your water, not fish you then have to alter your water for.

Plants, hardscape, and why they're not optional
Live plants aren't just decoration. They absorb ammonia and nitrate, provide oxygen at night when surface agitation is lower, reduce stress in prey-instinct fish like tetras, and give bettas territory to define. You don't need CO2 injection or specialist lighting for a community tank.
Low-tech plants that work under standard LED lighting: Anubias barteri, Microsorum pteropus (java fern), Vesicularia dubyana (java moss), Ceratophyllum demersum (hornwort), and Vallisneria spiralis. All of these grow in plain gravel with root tabs for the substrate-rooted ones.
For corydoras specifically, avoid sharp gravel - their barbels are sensitive and will erode on coarse substrate. Fine sand or smooth rounded gravel keeps them healthy. Corys that sit on the surface gasping or have shortened barbels are telling you the substrate or water quality is wrong.

Common plecos (Hypostomus plecostomus) reach 30-45 cm (12-18") and produce enormous waste - they're completely wrong for a 20 gallon. Bristlenose plecos (Ancistrus sp.) stay under 15 cm (6") and are a reasonable option, though they still add meaningful bioload. Otocinclus catfish (Otocinclus affinis) are the better fit for a 20 gallon: small, peaceful, and effective algae grazers. Keep them in groups of at least 4-6.
How many fish can I actually keep in a 20 gallon?
It depends entirely on species size and bioload, but a realistic ceiling for small community fish (under 5 cm / 2") is around 20-25 individuals total, including corys. Run your specific stocking plan through a stocking calculator and aim for 75% of the maximum - not 100%.
Do I really need to cycle a 20 gallon before adding fish?
Yes. An uncycled tank has no established colony of beneficial bacteria to convert ammonia to nitrite and then nitrate. Fish added to an uncycled tank are slowly poisoned by their own waste. Can I mix tetras and livebearers in the same 20 gallon?
Technically possible, but it's not a great idea. Tetras prefer soft, acidic water (pH 6.5-7.0) and livebearers prefer hard, alkaline water (pH 7.2-8.0). Keeping both means compromising at a pH and hardness that suits neither group optimally. You'll get fish that survive rather than thrive. Pick a water type and choose fish that genuinely suit it.
