Guide
Best sand for your aquarium
How to choose the right type of sand for fishkeeping and your tank setup.
Why sand?
Sand is often preferred over gravel for bottom-dwellers like corydoras, loaches, and dwarf cichlids. Soft sand protects delicate barbels and lets fish sift naturally. It also looks clean and modern. The trade-off: sand compacts more easily and needs careful cleaning.
Types of sand for aquariums
Aquarium-specific sand
Brands like CaribSea, Estes, and Fluval sell sand designed for aquariums. Usually pre-rinsed, inert, and available in natural or black. Best for peace of mind; costs more per pound.
Pool filter sand
Silica-based pool filter sand is cheap, inert, and widely used. Grain size is typically 0.4–0.8 mm — ideal for most tanks. Rinse thoroughly before use. Avoid sand with added chemicals or sharp edges.
Play sand
Play sand from hardware stores is cheap. It can work but varies by brand: some is dusty, some may compact or cloud. Rinse very well. Check for sharp edges or fine dust that can irritate fish.
Black sand
Black aquarium sand (often from Estes or similar) adds contrast and makes fish look striking. Some black sands can affect pH slightly; check the product. Popular for modern tanks and cichlid setups.
River sand
Natural river sand from aquatics stores can look great but varies in grain size and colour. Ensure it’s aquarium-safe and rinsed.
Aragonite sand
Used mainly in marine or African cichlid tanks. Buffers pH and hardness. Not suitable for soft-water tanks.
What to consider
- Grain size: Fine sand (0.2–0.5 mm) is softest for barbels but can compact. Medium (0.5–1 mm) is a good balance.
- Fish compatibility: Corydoras and loaches need smooth, fine sand. Avoid sharp or coarse sand.
- Plants: Sand works for rooted plants if you add root tabs or use a nutrient layer below.
- Maintenance: Use a gravel vacuum above the sand or stir gently to avoid compaction and anaerobic pockets.
Rinsing
Rinse all sand until the water runs clear. Use a bucket and hose outside, or a colander in a sink. Cloudy water from unrinsed sand is harmless but annoying.
Quick answer
For most freshwater tanks, pool filter sand or aquarium-specific sand is a safe choice. For corydoras and loaches, prefer fine, smooth sand. For black tanks, use branded black aquarium sand.
