Oscars: keeping them and what to watch out for

Oscars are big, intelligent, and full of personality — but they have specific needs and common pitfalls. Here’s what you need to know.

Why people keep oscars

Oscars (Astronotus ocellatus) are South American cichlids that grow to 10–12 inches or more. They recognise their keepers, beg for food, and show clear personalities. Many aquarists are drawn to that interaction. The trade-off is size, mess, and aggression — they are not community fish.

Tank size and filtration

A single adult oscar needs at least a 75 gallon (284 litre) tank; 90–125 gallons is better. A pair needs 125 gallons or more. They produce a lot of waste. Filtration should be robust — canister or sump, rated for a tank larger than yours. Weekly water changes of 25–50% are standard. Use a stocking calculator to check bioload if you add tank mates.

Water and temperature

Warm (76–80°F / 24–27°C), neutral to slightly acidic. They tolerate a range but prefer stability. Test regularly; oscars are sensitive to ammonia and nitrite spikes.

Feeding

High-quality cichlid pellets as a staple. Supplement with frozen or live foods (bloodworms, shrimp, earthworms) but avoid overfeeding. Oscars are greedy and can develop fatty liver disease. Feed once or twice daily, only what they eat in a few minutes.

Watchouts

  • Hole-in-the-head (HITH): Linked to poor diet, stress, and water quality. Provide varied, quality food and keep water clean.
  • Aggression: Oscars eat smaller fish. Tank mates must be large enough (6+ inches) and non-aggressive. Severums, silver dollars, and large plecos sometimes work; many setups are oscar-only.
  • Decor: They dig and rearrange. Heavy rocks, no sharp edges. Plants often get uprooted — use robust species or go plant-free.
  • Lifespan: They can live 10–15 years. Be ready for the long haul.

Quick takeaways

  • 75+ gallons per oscar; strong filtration and weekly water changes.
  • Quality pellets, varied diet, avoid overfeeding.
  • Watch for HITH, aggression, and decor damage. Plan for a long-term commitment.
