Autumn heater checklist: dual heaters, failure modes and the post-summer switchback
The fifteen minutes in October that prevent a January disaster - and why heaters fail on the first cold night, not in deep winter.
- The dial is not a thermometer. Check the tank against a separate thermometer before the first properly cold night, not after it.
- Above roughly 200 L (50 US gal), run two heaters of half the wattage at opposite ends rather than one large stick. You get even heat and a safety net.
- Heaters fail two ways. Stuck off is a slow chill over days, with ich arriving about a week later. Stuck on can cook a tank overnight.
- Reverse the summer setup deliberately - lids back on, fans off and unplugged, photoperiod stepped back up, dial reset from scratch.
- Correct a crash or a spike slowly - around 0.5 °C per hour. No boiling water, no ice cubes.
Why heaters fail in autumn, not deep winter
Your heater has spent June to September doing almost nothing. In a room sitting at 23-24 °C with a target of 26 °C, it barely cycles on. Then one night in October the room drops to 16 °C and the heater is asked, for the first time in four months, to actually work. That is when the pitted thermostat contact welds shut, the hairline crack from a summer water change finally lets water in, and the perished suction cup drops the heater onto the substrate.
There is a second reason autumn is the dangerous window, and it is about the room rather than the equipment. Autumn rooms swing more than winter rooms. The central heating is not on a daily schedule yet, the nights are already cold, and the days are still mild - a 6-8 °C day-to-night swing in an unheated UK room through October is completely ordinary. By January the house is heated to a routine and the room is more stable than it was in autumn. The tank that sails through midwinter is often the one that nearly died in October.
None of this is about buying more equipment. Most autumn heater failures are caught by one thermometer and ten minutes of looking. The kit only matters once you know what the tank is actually doing.
The 15-minute autumn check
1. Verify against something that is not the heater
The numbers moulded into a heater dial are a factory approximation. A drift of 1-2 °C is normal, and it gets worse after a few seasons of thermal cycling. Put a cheap digital thermometer with a probe, or a glass alcohol thermometer, in the tank and read that instead. If you can stretch to two, put one at each end - that is also your stratification test.
Read it twice: late morning once the lights have been on a while, and last thing at night. The number that matters is not the average, it is the swing. A tank that reads 26 °C at 9pm and 23 °C at 7am is telling you the heater cannot keep up with the room overnight, even though it looks fine whenever you happen to glance at it.
If the two ends of the tank read more than about 1 °C apart, you have a flow problem, not a wattage problem. Move the heater into the path of the filter outflow before you spend money on more watts.
2. Unplug, look properly, reseat
Unplug the heater and leave it fifteen minutes before you put a hand in the tank. Then go over it:
- Condensation inside the glass tube - water has got in. Replace it; there is no sensible repair.
- Hairline cracks or a scorched patch near the element, usually a sign it has been run dry at some point.
- Limescale on the tube. Scale insulates the element, which makes it run hotter than its thermostat thinks it is. Soak it in a weak vinegar solution and rinse thoroughly.
- Perished suction cups. They go brittle and let go in cold weather, usually at 2am.
- The minimum immersion line. Most modern heaters are fully submersible, but check the marking on the tube rather than assuming.
Then put it back somewhere the water is genuinely moving - near, but not pressed against, the filter return. A heater sitting in dead water in a back corner heats a small pocket of water and its own thermostat, switches off satisfied, and leaves the rest of the tank cool. If you keep anything that likes to sit on things - a bristlenose, a big goldfish, a territorial cichlid - fit a heater guard now. It is not for the heater's benefit.
Never top up or water change with the heater still switched on and partly exposed to air. A glass heater that has been running dry will crack the moment cold water hits it. Cold rooms change the sums
Wattage is not a property of the tank, it is a property of the gap between your room and your target - the delta. The same 120 L tank needs roughly double the wattage in an unheated spare room that it needs in a lived-in lounge. These are starting points for a tropical target of about 25-26 °C:

Adjust upwards if the tank is open-topped (add 10-15% for evaporative loss), if it stands against an external wall or under a draughty window, or if you run an external canister whose pipework sits in cold air. Adjust downwards if the room is genuinely warm all winter.
Before adding watts, though, add insulation. A lid is the cheapest heat saving available. A sheet of foam board behind the tank and another under it will do more for a cold-room tank than the next 50 W of heater, and it does not fail in the night.
Dual heaters: when one stick is a single point of failure
Half and half beats one big one
Above roughly 200 L (50 US gal), two heaters of half the wattage - two 100 W units in a 200 L tank rather than a single 200 W - is the better build for three separate reasons:
- Distribution. One heater at one end of a 120 cm tank produces a warm end and a cool end. Two, one at each end, produce a tank.
- Redundancy on failure. If one sticks off, half the heating is still running. The tank drifts down slowly over a day, which is survivable and noticeable, instead of crashing.
- A smaller worst case. If one sticks on, it is only half the wattage, driving a large body of water. The overshoot is slower and smaller, which buys you the hours you need to notice it.
Set both to the same target, or stagger them by about 0.5 °C so one is the primary and the other only kicks in when the first cannot keep up. The staggered version is quietly diagnostic: if the backup heater's light is coming on regularly, the primary has either failed or is undersized.
Below 200 L, two heaters is usually more clutter than it is worth. The better redundancy for a nano is a spare heater in a drawer and a thermometer you actually read.
Stuck off versus stuck on
Stuck off is the quiet one. The temperature drifts down 1-3 °C over a day or two. Fish go still, sit lower in the tank, clamp their fins and stop eating. Roughly a week later, white spot appears, because chilling suppresses the immune response while the parasite carries on cycling. The diagnostic tell is that nothing else changed: parameters are fine, no new fish went in, but the tank is several degrees cooler than the dial claims. Stuck on is the one that empties tanks. Thermostat contacts weld closed and the heater simply runs. Overnight, a 100 L tank with a 200 W heater can climb well past 32 °C. The cruel part is that warm water holds less dissolved oxygen precisely when the fish need more of it, so the first sign is usually gasping at the surface rather than anything that looks like heat. No amount of checking protects you from a thermostat that welds at 3am. The only thing that does is an external temperature controller with its own probe, plugged in between the socket and the heater, set to cut power at a ceiling. If a tank's stock matters to you, that is the single most useful winter purchase - more useful than a better heater, because it protects you from the heater.
The post-summer switchback
Everything you did in July to keep the tank cool now works against you. Reverse it deliberately, as a list, rather than assuming it has sorted itself out:
- Lids back on. Evaporative cooling was the point in summer. In October it is a heat leak and a draught.
- Fans off and unplugged. A clip fan left on a timer will fight the heater all winter. Both lose, and your electricity bill pays for the argument.
- Photoperiod back up, gradually. If you shortened the lights to cut heat, step them back up by about 30 minutes a week rather than all at once - a sudden return to a long day in a tank whose plants have adapted to a short one is an algae invitation.
- Reset the dial from scratch. Last year's pencil mark is not evidence. Set it against a real thermometer, wait a few hours, adjust, repeat.
- Check what has changed around the tank. The radiator that was cold all summer is now on. Underfloor heating is on. A tank that had a neutral neighbour in August may have a heat source a metre away in November.
- Rethink water changes. Your tap water is much colder now. A 40% change with 8 °C tap water can pull a 100 L tank down 4-5 °C in minutes. Mix to temperature in the bucket and check it, or do smaller changes more often - see water change frequency.
- Think about the days you are away. If you drop the house heating when you go away, the tank drops with it. Plan that in before you leave - holiday tank care covers the rest.
Species targets worth checking before it gets cold
Autumn is a good moment to confirm that the number you are heating to is actually the number your stock wants. A few where it matters most:
- Betta - 25-27 °C. A betta at 21 °C in a cold flat is one of the most common winter casualties there is: lethargy, refused food, then fin and immune problems. Unheated betta tanks work fine in August and fail in October. See betta care.
- Discus - 28-30 °C and stable, which is exactly what an undersized heater in a cold room cannot deliver.
- Goldfish - the "goldfish do not need a heater" line is true only in a stable room. Fancy goldfish in a room swinging 6 °C a day do worse than fancy goldfish held steadily at 20 °C. Coldwater means tolerant of cool, not tolerant of swings. More in goldfish myths.
- Hillstream loaches and white cloud mountain minnows - genuinely prefer 18-22 °C. Autumn is their best season. Do not heat them to tropical numbers just because the rest of the shelf is at 26 °C. See coldwater setups.
- Neocaridina shrimp - happy cool, at 18-24 °C, but a sudden shift still triggers moulting problems. Stable beats warm.

If the temperature has already crashed or spiked
After a crash: bring it back at roughly 0.5 °C per hour. Do not float a jug of boiling water. Fit a correctly sized heater, put the lid on, and let the room do some of the work. Then watch for white spot over the following ten days, because that is the usual sequel.
After a spike: no ice cubes, ever. Switch the heater off, lift the lid, and get surface agitation going with an air stone, because hot water is oxygen-poor water. Bring it down with small volumes - 10% at a time - of slightly cooler dechlorinated water. Our heatwave protocol is the same drill.
After either: skip feeding for 24 hours, then feed lightly. Test ammonia and nitrite daily for about a week - a temperature extreme stresses the filter bacteria as well as the fish, and a post-event cycle wobble is common. Keep an eye on the core parameters until they settle.

Log tonight's temperature, then tomorrow morning's. If the gap is more than 1-2 °C, fix wattage or placement before the first hard frost.

A long duty cycle is normal in a cold room, but the heater should still switch off periodically. One that never cycles off is either undersized for the gap between your room and your target temperature, or it has failed in the on position. Check it against a separate thermometer rather than the indicator light.
Do I really need two heaters?
Above roughly 200 L (50 US gal), yes - two units at half the wattage give you even heat across the footprint and a partial safety net if one fails. Below that, one correctly sized heater plus a spare in the cupboard is usually the more sensible build.
Can an aquarium heater be too powerful?
A working thermostat-controlled heater that is larger than strictly necessary just cycles more often, which is harmless. The real risk is what happens when the thermostat sticks on: a 300 W heater in a 60 L tank is a far worse failure than a 50 W one. That is the argument for sizing sensibly and using an external controller on valuable tanks.
How long do aquarium heaters last?
Treat two to three years of continuous service as the point to start watching one closely, and around five years as a sensible replacement horizon - sooner if it is the only heater on the tank. Heaters rarely give warning before a thermostat failure, so age is the best signal you have.
My flat stays warm - can I skip the heater over winter?
The risk is not the average temperature, it is the night the boiler fails or you go away and turn the heating off. A correctly sized heater in a warm room costs very little to run because it barely cycles, and it covers exactly the scenario that kills tropical fish.
Is it safe to turn the heater off during a water change?
Yes, and it is safer than leaving it on. A glass heater exposed to air keeps heating, and cracks when cold water reaches it. Switch the heater and filter off, do the change, refill, wait a couple of minutes for the water to move, then switch both back on.
